Some Sundays remind me why I love living and working in Oconee County.
This Sunday afternoon started with a visit to the new Target in Seneca, and we then stopped by two open houses, one in Westminster and one in Seneca. For me, walking through homes is never a waste of time. Whether the property is my listing or another broker’s listing, I learn something every time I step through the door.
Photos and MLS remarks are helpful, but they never tell the whole story. In person, you notice the driveway, the floor plan, the light, the setting, the condition, the road in, and the feeling of the location.
Two Different Sides of the Market
The two homes we visited showed very different sides of today’s Upstate South Carolina real estate market.
One was a totally renovated home on a small lot near the hospital. Clean, updated, convenient, and ready for someone who wants the work already done. Homes like that are in demand because many buyers want comfort, low maintenance, and access to town without taking on a long list of repairs or a renovation project. This home was in the Bountyland community, which had a screened porch, a 2-car garage, and community landscaping — so very little yard work.
The other was a cabin on just over 5 acres near the Chauga River, near Westminster. It offered privacy, quiet, trees, room to breathe, and a workshop. For the right buyer, that kind of property is hard to replace. It is perfect for someone looking for peace and quiet, a little elbow room, and a place that feels removed from the rush of everyday life.
They were completely different properties, but both had strong buyer appeal.
That is what makes our local real estate market so interesting right now. Some buyers want convenience, updates, small-lot living, and easy access to medical care, shopping, restaurants, and town. Other buyers want privacy, acreage, woods, water, a workshop, and a setting where they can slow down.
Both types of homes are in demand.
Why Open Houses Still Matter
Open houses are not just for buyers. They are also valuable for agents who want to stay sharp and understand local inventory. Walking through homes in person helps us compare price, condition, location, and buyer appeal.
It also allows an agent to preview a home without asking the seller to clean, leave, and prepare for a private showing. That is respectful of the seller’s time and still helps us gather information for future buyers. The more homes we see, the better we understand the market.
Farmers Market Peaches for Dessert
After the open houses, the day ended with something simple and very summer: fresh peaches from the farmers market on Saturday, grilled.
Grilled Fresh Peaches
Ingredients:
4 ripe peaches, cut in half with pits removed
1 to 2 tablespoons melted butter
1 to 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey
A sprinkle of cinnamon, optional
Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or Greek yogurt for serving
Directions:
Heat the grill to medium.
Brush the cut side of each peach with melted butter. Sprinkle lightly with brown sugar and cinnamon, or drizzle with honey.
Place the peaches cut-side down on the grill. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until grill marks appear and the peaches begin to soften.
Turn them over and cook another 2 to 3 minutes.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or Greek yogurt.
It is simple, fresh, and just right for a summer evening.
Living the Local Lifestyle
That is one of the best parts of life in Oconee County. A productive Sunday can include a little shopping at the new Target in Seneca, open houses in Westminster and Seneca, local market research, good conversation, and fresh farmers market peaches on the grill.
Sometimes the best days are not complicated.
They are simply a good mix of business, community, real estate, and the small pleasures that make this area feel like home.
