Proud to be an American because...

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

We recently celebrated America's 250th birthday and all had different reasons for celebrating but most all of us did. Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Real Estate Svcs. and Kathy Streib are cosponsoring this month's challenge about why we are proud to be an American. Well here's my story.

When I was young we lived with my mother's parents in a two flat in a Chicago neighborhood. My grandparents had immigrated to America in the early 1900's. Although it was the early 1950's my grandfather still did not speak much English but understood it quite well. My grandmother was a seamstress and my grandfather an accomplished carpenter, cabinet and furniture maker.

My grandmother still had contact with her brother living in a community country who wanted to immigrate with his family to America. In those days it cost money, commonly known as a bribe, to be successful in a shorter period of time. Since most could not earn the money to pay the bribe, where there was a will there was a way. Bribery was well understood to Chicago residents in those days.

My Dad would give my grandmother 100 dollar bills that she would skillfully sew into clothes sent to her brother. When he had received the necessary accumulation, which took some time they were able to come to America.

Me, then about seven or eight asked my Dad why he did it? He said to make my grandmother happy. I asked if he thought it was worth it? He said she was happy that her brother and his family were free. I have never forgotten the word "free".

The brother came to America opened a business and worked hard. His daughter went to school here and grew up free. Her brother squandered the opportunity and got in to legal trouble. Some get it and some never do.

I think of freedom and opportunity everyday, but especially on the Fourth of July every year since the 1950's because America is, without argument, the land of opportunity. The choice is up to the individual. This is my entry to the July challenge.

Wayne Martin well said.  America is the land of opportunity, but it is up to each and every one as to what they do with that opportunity.

Wayne, ours is a country that many seek to call home and there was a time when that type of payment did get people here quicker. It is unfortunate that that young man wanted to find an easy way to live here.

I love this Wayne- America is the land of opportunity and freedom. That said, we have the choice to work hard and earn what we want. Some never get it.

Unfortunately in trying to make like easier for people we created a system that lead people to believe they were entitled without effort.

It was indeed a process and not an event, but it worked out.

What a great post, Wayne! I had no idea about this bit of your history! My mother "imported" family from post-war Germany in the 1950's... her mother, her sister and family, her step-daughter and family. So I can related to what your family was doing.

My Dad wanted my grandmother happy and he wanted her brother and his family to experience freedom. As for the son, he got him a job. When it did not work out, he got him another job. When that did not work out he put him to work in his own shop. When he failed to be appreciative, he was fired

Freedom and the opportunity to make choices are priceless. Unfortunately, many today prefer entitlement and false dreams.

Hello Wayne Martin - sewing $100 bills into clothing - genius!

America is the land of opportunity and freedom ... May God continue to bless America and keep it that way.

I'm curious, where did your grandparents immigrate from?

Thank you for participating in the July challenge.

My grandfather was Austrian and my grandmother was Polish. They both immigrated from Warsaw.

If you choose the right opportunity. Many today prefer entitlement and free stuff paid for by others. That false dream may destroy us.

Wanting, needing something so badly you sacrifice to earn your way to a better life. Taking a chance and digging in with grit to focus, applying day and night sacrifice, determination to create a healthier future for your family.

Your Austrian Polish family blood mixed with real life experiences of sacrifice to gain freedom is so inspiring Wayne Martin. Now we all get a glimpse of where your dedication to anything you do comes from....

Great story, Wayne Martin. Freedom gave everyone the exact same door to walk through, but personal character often dictated what they did with their lives once they walked through it. As a 2nd-generation American myself, these family stories always mean a great deal to me. Thank you for sharing.

Good afternoon Wayne Martin ,

So glad to see your post featured! We are the land of opportunity and one can seize it, work hard and prosper. We all have the freedom to make choices and some get blinded by quick money and making a fast buck which usually needs out well!

Wayne Martin  I understand a little more now why my grandfather came first. Later, the older children, then the grandmother with the youngest children... Great story. Thank you, Wayne
