E‑Bike & E‑Scooter Rules in Gaithersburg

Illustration of person riding an e-bike through a city

Electric bikes and scooters are becoming a popular way to get around Gaithersburg, and the City is reminding riders of key rules to keep everyone safe. E‑bikes fall into three classes: two that assist riders up to 20 mph, and one that supports speeds up to 28 mph. E‑scooters top out at 20 mph.

Riders must follow City regulations, which differ from Montgomery County. E‑bikes and e‑scooters may be used on most sidewalks unless prohibited by signage, but riders must yield to pedestrians, give an audible signal when passing, and keep speeds at or below 20 mph or 10 mph when pedestrians are present.

It’s unlawful to ride unsafely, operate on any sidewalk that provides less than three feet of flat, paved area, carry items that prevent proper control, or ride without lights when it is dark. Riders under 16 must wear an ASTM‑compliant helmet, and only manufacturer‑approved passenger seating is allowed.

Hi Roy... rules are nice... the problem I see here at my end is not only the lack of rules, where there are some the fact that they are ignored.
