When David and I were doing the Benagil Caves, he told me about a Salt Mine in Loule (where he lives part-time). So, did some research and made a reservation for the day after my appointment at AIMA. I will be in Loule, so will be easy.
It is a two-hour tour that will be 230 meters underground and 230-million-year-old geological formations. This is the part I wasn't THAT excited about, a bit nervous about going into a "cave". There have been several cave rescues lately.

Current Mining Operations
- Production Output: The mine extracts roughly 7,000 tons of rock salt annually.
- Salt Usage: Unlike table salt, this rock salt is not for human consumption. It is primarily harvested for road de-icing across Portugal and Spain, as well as for animal feed supplements and industrial purposes.
- Shift in Focus: As market demand has shifted over time, the operators now rely heavily on industrial tourism alongside specialized commercial salt commissions.
