National Mutt Day: The Best Dogs Don't Come With Pedigrees 🐾

🐾 Happy National Mutt Day To All The Paw‑some Mutts & Their Humans! 🐾 From Charlotte's Pet Friendly Realtor®🐾

"A mutt is couture-it's the only one like it in the world, made especially for you."

Isaac Mizrahi

Today, July 31st, marks the 21st anniversary of National Mutt Day—celebrated here in Charlotte and across the country! Also known as Mixed Breed Dog Day, it was founded in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to shine a light on the millions of mixed breed dogs waiting in shelters for their “fur‑ever” homes and to promote the joy and value of adopting them.

“A mutt is the best kind of dog you can get. They’re the product of the best of all worlds.”

 Unknown

National Mutt Day is the perfect excuse to visit your local shelter and meet some of these incredible dogs. 🐶+🐶=💯

All of my own dogs have been mixed breeds, adopted from shelters here in the Charlotte area. Without a doubt, they’ve been the most loving, intelligent, and healthy dogs we’ve ever had. When people ask about their breed, my favorite answer is always: “A pedigree mutt.” I guess you could say I’m an Official Mutt Lover!

"The intelligence of a Poodle and the loyalty of a Lassie. The bark of a Shepherd and the heart of a Saint Bernard. The spots of a Dalmatian, the size of a Schnauzer, and the speed of a Greyhound. A genuine, All-American Mutt has it all." 🐶+🐶=💯

ASPCA Slogan

🐶 Why Mutts (Mixed Breed Dogs) Make Amazing Companions

Choosing a mutt over a purebred comes with many benefits—one of the biggest being longevity and health. Mixed breed dogs often live longer and healthier lives because of their more diverse gene pool. While purebred dogs can be prone to breed-specific illnesses, mutts benefit from genetic variety, which can help cancel out certain hereditary health issues. Mutts are also generally considered to have better temperaments and higher intelligence.

And I’ve seen it first-hand: our sweet Gracie lived a happy, healthy life to the age of 15. Now, we have Bingo—smart, affectionate, and thriving at the age of nine and still acting like a young puppy! I’m looking forward to many more wonderful years with him.

If you’ve ever thought about adding a dog to your family, today’s the perfect day to consider a mixed breed. You just might find your best friend and the best of all breeds wrapped in one wagging tail.

"There is no such thing as a ‘bad’ breed of dog, only bad owners.”

The last dog I ever had was named Fred. He was the smartest dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I do not have the heart to replace him.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... I understand where you are coming from. When my Gracie died I felt the same way about "replacing" her. I always believe she was nudging me to give a home to another shelter dog and that she ultimately led me to my Bingo nine years ago. We love him to death and we never seem to think of him as a replacement.

Good morning Nina. We have not had many pets, but all were rescue animals lacking true pedigree. Out last one was amazing, so much so we find ourselves in the same circle as Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin hi Wayne... I refer to my mutts as pedigreed mutts... they have the best of the best in their bloodlines.

Good morning, Nina,
As you know, I don't have a mutt (or any pet) at the moment, but there's a cat lover in my life now, so who knows what my future holds!  There may be whiskers, purring, and a litter box somewhere in my near future.

Carol Williams hi Carol... as I always say, a house is not a home without a cat!

Shortly after moving into our home, the boys were 3 and 5 years old, we went to a sporting goods store, out front were 5 of the furriest, little bundles in a box. Needless to say, we chose one and Bronco became part of the family, Nina Hollander, Broker.

He was lab and golden retriever, had the best disposition and lived to be 13 years old. What a dog!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! hi Wanda... I can just "see" Bronco in my mind's eye. Such a wonderful mix of two breeds. Those mutts are just the best, aren't they?

Nina, gosh it has been YEARS since I had a dog - my 2nd marriage.  We had a cocker spaniel, until he peed on Mike's foot.   LOL

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner LOL, Joan. Cocker Spaniels are known for peeing... lovely dogs, but that is an issue.

Nina Hollander, Broker - From the time I was a child, throughout marriage and children, dogs were always a big part of my life and my family! Whether they were mutts or pure breeds, black, white, brown, red, mixed colors, or spotted, they were all loved unconditionally as were me and my family.

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... I did not grow up with dogs... too hard in NY City. I grew up with cats. We didn't have dogs until we moved to Charlotte where we had a yard and dog park for them.

Nina somehow dogs 'find' me and I never cared if they were a mixed breed or not. Barney was a Bichon Poo and a very smart dog.  He found us too!  Norman is by my side right now, sleeping on a pillow and he's not a mutt.  But he's a sweet, sweet shiatsu!   Who knows who will find me next!

Jul 31, 2026 11:26 AM

Anna "Banana" Kruchten so funny you say that, Anna... because that's exactly what I've always said about my dogs (and my cats)... that they found me.

HI Nina- we've had mutts and purebreds, and I've loved them all.   Our last 2 dogs...Brittanys...both had autoimmune diseases and went blind suddenly. Like Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty  Larry and I cannot bring ourselves to replace them. That said, if I had another dog, it would be shelter mutt.

Jul 31, 2026 12:02 PM

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... was blindness something unique to the breed? For example, I know white cats are prone to deafness.

Nina given the mixture of nationalities most of us come from, there may be more human mutts than dog mutts.
