Throwback Thursdays ~ Fun Facts ~ 8.06.2026

Good morning, Dorie... everything on this list post 1966 is something I remember quite well. But in my mind many of these happens happened "just the other day." Must be a sign of getting old.

Those cosmonauts are getting close to their 25th anniversary!

The story of those miners caught the attention of so many. I feel like it helped many get over the drag of the market conditions and recession.

Dorie, I do remember the Mall of America opening and how it generated so much interest. I do wonder how much of it is still in use today as buying has gone online and retail space is so barren in malls today.

Dorie, thanks for bringing up the miners, as next week, I will be going into a cave, worrying!

Hmm, I went to the Mall of America when I was there visiting friends in Minnesota. It is quite impressive, haha.

Hi Dorie- I remember the Chilean miners being trapped.  It reminded me that when you think you're having a bad day and you hate your life, think again.

I've never been to the Mall of America, but I've been to the West Edmonton Mall, which is nearly as big. It was mind-boggling.

Dorie I remember the baseball strike of 1994.  It did a number on the players career stats.

the Mall of America & trapped Chilean miners timelines seemed so much more recent!!!

For once, I remember more than I'd never heard of, Dorie! LOL I even have a tie to the one in 1966. I spent most of my years in nursing in the operating room. When I first went to the OR, I was put in the open heart unit and one of the surgeons that I worked with quite a bit was a world renowned cardiovascular surgeon, Francis Robicsek. He and Michael Debakey were pioneers in heart transplantation--cardiovascular surgery in general and were very close friends. 

During every single vascular case, we used a pair of forceps called the Debakey. Here's a photo of the two brilliant surgeons. Isn't it crazy the paths our lives take us?

Dr. R is the second one and Dr. D is on the far right. Incredibly brilliant men who were beyond generous, both in their gifts to those who needed their skills (patients) as well as in teaching young residents, fellows, interns and nurses.
