Motivational Monday…Forgiveness

Some things we do, we have to do to help ourselves. The byproduct is often that it helps others as well.

Forgiveness is unlocking the door to set someone free and realizing you were the prisoner!
Max Lucado

A friend I was chatting with is having a difficult time forgiving someone for what they did a decade ago.  It wasn’t anything major such as theft or even worse. She no longer sees that person but if the subject comes around…you can see that it unnerves her as if it happened yesterday.

Her friends and I try not to bring that person up, but sometimes it happens. In her mind, she feels that if she forgives them, it’s as if she’s saying,,“It’s all right that you did that.”

And, in her mind, it means they won.

But did they??

When we hold on to grudges—and most of us know how easy that can be—the person we hurt the most is ourselves.

Who knows what the other person is thinking... or even if they're thinking about it at all? While we're carrying the weight of anger, resentment, or disappointment, they may have already moved on with their lives.

When a deep injury is done to us, we never recover until we forgive.
Alan Paton

For our own mental and physical health, we have to learn to let go of any anger or animosity we feel.
-Focus on what we have
-Focus on what we’ve learned, then file it away
-Focus on a new goal or project

So what do you do when and if you see that person again?  Greet them with a big smile. Say “Hello” as if nothing they do or say can ruin your day because…it can’t unless you want it to.

Forgiveness doesn't make the other person right, it makes you free.

It can also be a matter  of something that was said or done without malice and yet the perron that received it wrong, may not have confronted them at the time to accept an explanation or apology and only one person feels that anger.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754   Very true.   It could happen to any of us. Someone was not happy with what I did or didn't do (in their mind) and I had no idea. They never said anything to me until months later. Instead they wallowed in their own anger bubble.

Good morning, Kathy... you'll get no argument on this issue from me... however, depending on a situation, I might forgive, but I don't forget. And I'm good with that... not forgetting in some situations is a self-protections mechanism.

Nina Hollander, Broker oh...I NEVER forget. I'll forgive in my own way depending upon the situation. We all have different ways of protecting ourselves.

Forgiving someone when they've really done wrong is a difficult thing to do, and may take quite a while - but it truly does help US to forgive someone else.

Kat Palmiotti I agree. It's never an easy thing to do. However, in the long run, if we do it for no other reason than self preservation, then we have to.

Good morning Kathy. Sometime forgiveness is best and sometimes it just can't be done. choose carefully! Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I think it's one of those things you have to work it... if you want to. And, that's ok as well as we acknowledge it.

Kathy, like others say, you can forgive, or maybe only slightly, but you don't forget.

Hi Kathy,
I'm not sure "forgive" is the right word. I just don't think about it. I live my life and let the other person live theirs. If I see that person, I am polite enough but make no effort to carry on a conversation of any kind.

Carol Williams True. for me, it's the level of the transgression and how that person has handled it as well. I never forget.

My brother cannot forgive my mother for things that happened many decades ago. It has shaped his life (and not in a good way).

That's too bad Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty    This is an example of letting that affect our own life.

Good afternoon Kathy,

You have given excellent advice. The only way to move on and put it behind you is to forgive and forget! Then you can truly be free and move forward!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX to so many of us "forgive" means you've forgotten what they did and/or saying it's ok. That's not the case at all.

Kathy one of the sad things about holding a grudge is that many times the other person does not realize we are holding a grudge against them.

I agree George Souto so true. They may have no idea they did anything wrong (or don't care.)

interesting and thoughtful quote. forgiving a great injustice is nearly impossible in my mind. i simply can't forgive the person i married and cheated on me with my friend and business partner. and ruined the family. years ago. impossible.

Rick and I had a horrible experience with his employer's wife after her husband died and she took over the business. We had been very close friends prior.

She did and said terrible things to Rick and forced him to quit.

I had so much anger and such a fear of running into her somewhere that I was holding in.

Years later we stopped into the dealership to speak with one of the employees ( boss lady wasn't supposed to be there) and she came walking toward us (not knowing we were there). I quickly walked up to her with a big smile and a happy hello...she was horrified, didn't know how to react. She was stumbling over her words trying to apologize and explain away the past mess.

It was GREAT! So satisfying to see her so out of sorts. After that all the anger I had been holding was gone!
