Summer In My Corner of the World

Confession Time: I Survive Baltimore Summers One Snowball at a Time

The ActiveRain challenge asked us to write about summer in our corner of the world.

If you ask most Baltimoreans what they love about summer, you'll probably hear about crab feasts, Orioles baseball, backyard barbecues, the beach, and long sunny evenings.

Then there's me.

I have a confession. Summer is my least favorite season.

Give me a Baltimore winter any day. I rarely wear gloves, seldom wear a heavy coat, and I'm perfectly happy driving with the heat turned off. I don't enjoy zero-degree weather, but I'll choose cold over heat every single time.

Summer, on the other hand, and I have reached an understanding. It tries to melt me, and I do everything possible to stay inside with the air conditioning running. My little neck air conditioner has become one of my favorite possessions. It goes almost everywhere I do.

Anyone who knows me knows I simply do not function well in the heat.

My wonderful husband, Lee, was exactly the opposite. He loved sunshine and warm weather. Every now and then he'd grin and say, "I'm moving to Florida."

I'd smile back and answer, "Okay, Babe... but you're really going to miss me."

That usually ended the discussion.

My idea of a perfect summer vacation wasn't Florida. It was flying north to Maine or New England, where the temperatures were cooler and the scenery was spectacular. One of my favorite memories was flying with several pilot friends to a tiny airport where, at the end of the runway, there was a lobster barge. We'd enjoy an all-you-can-eat lobster feast, climb back into the airplane, and fly home the same day. Now that was my kind of summer adventure.

Even on workdays, summer manages to surprise me. Last Sunday I arrived at the radio station just minutes before going live for my weekly real estate show. I opened the studio door and felt what seemed like a blast furnace. Someone had accidentally left a small space heater running with both studio doors closed. Thankfully, I had my little neck air conditioner to cool me off during commercial breaks. It couldn't run while I was on the air because it was too noisy, but it certainly earned its keep that day.

Now, before you think I spend three months complaining, Baltimore does have a way of winning me over.

Our trees become full and magnificent. The lawns are rich, green, and beautiful. Driving through our neighborhoods feels like traveling through a giant park. Summer also brings vine-ripened Maryland tomatoes, sweet corn, fresh crabs, peaches, and all the wonderful local produce that reminds us why we look forward to harvest season.

And then there are Baltimore snowballs. Not snowballs made of snow. I'm talking about our famous finely shaved ice covered with delicious, flavored syrup, and sometimes a layer of soft-serve ice cream tucked right in the middle before another layer of icy goodness goes on top.

If you've never had a real Baltimore snowball, you've missed one of summer's greatest treats. Will I ever love summer? Probably not. Will I appreciate its beauty, its bounty, and every delicious Baltimore snowball while waiting patiently for autumn? Absolutely.

Until then, if you're looking for me, I'll be the one happily standing in the air conditioning, wearing my little neck cooler, admiring Baltimore's beautiful green landscape... from the coolest spot I can find.

Margaret, love the idea of taking the private plane up to Maine for some fresh lobster!  The last couple of vacations Liz and I took together involved trips to Boston and/or Boothbay Harbor.

And I remember the heat & humidity near Baltimore.  No AC in Bancroft Hall (at least not when I went, I've heard rumors they have it now), so Plebe Summer was sweat saturation.  Come back to our room during the day, switch T-shirt to the closest thing we had to fresh, lay the used one on the windowsill to air out, and repeat throughout the day!  Can't say I miss that part of the experience!

That was a memorable trip, and there was a lobster barge with all-you-can-eat lobster. That would be a cute story to tell.

Your Plebe summer is not something you want to remember.

Good morning, Margaret.
The older I get, the less tolerant I am of the heat, especially if there is humidity involved. I'd certainly join you for one of those Baltimore Snowballs!

I love the story about flying to Maine for lobsters! I would have loved that.

As for not enjoying the heat, I hear you! I have to say though that here in Montana, since our air is so dry, the heat is not as bad as it was in the east with all the humidity. I don't miss that!

Kat Palmiotti,

There are so many flying stories. Lee was an instrument-rated pilot. We took day trips and weekends, and even flew cross-country, enjoying the layovers to see the states. We traveled with friends and other pilots. Lunch in Atlantic City or Ocean City or any nearby airport with a runway restaurant was the norm. The first Thanksgiving when we were dating, we flew to upstate NY and had lunch at the Concord.  Now that was an impressive date for a 21-year-old!

Good morning Margaret. I prefer heat to the cold after 27 years in Florida. I was born in Chicago and have been back for 10 years now. I like the Fall and Spring for cool evenings. Until today never heard of a Baltimore Snowball. At first thought it was just another name for a Snow Cone until I read on and you mentioned ice cream in the middle. Sounds delicious. Enjoy your day.

Baltimore snowballs date back to the mid-19th century, born from horse-drawn ice wagons, the Great Depression, and neighborhood shack culture.
Origins in the 1800s
  • Ice wagons: In the mid-1800s, ice blocks shipped from the North passed through Baltimore on horse-drawn wagons.
  • Children begging: On hot summer days, kids chased the wagons and begged the workers for ice shavings.
  • Homemade syrups: Children carried the ice home in bowls or rags, where mothers poured homemade sweet syrups over the top.
  • Egg custard: The original and defining flavor was egg custard, made from a mix of eggs, vanilla, and sugar.
    Hard Times and Expansion
    • Penny sundaes: During the Great Depression, the cheap, refreshing treat became known as a "penny sundae" or "hard-time sundae".
    • Job creation: Selling snowballs from small wooden shacks, front porches, or cubbyholes offered a way for struggling residents to earn money.
    • The Marshmallow tradition: Pourable marshmallow cream eventually became the standard signature topping ladled over the top of the syrupy ice. [
      Evolution and Culture

      • Classic flavors: Beyond egg custard, old-school staples expanded to include chocolate, cherry (called "red"), and skylight (a blue raspberry-vanilla blend). [
      • Distinct style: Unlike flimsy paper-cone snow cones or fine Hawaiian shaved ice, Baltimore snowballs use a coarser, crunchy-yet-slushy texture designed to withstand humid Charm City summers in a Styrofoam cup.

Thanks for the history, and you both should come over to Baltimore for lunch- my treat- and share a snowball together.

I experienced snow cones in my youth ... they never had ice cream in the middle.

No matter what, you find beauty to appreciate even when it is hot!

Margaret, I don't enjoy the really cold Winter days, but after being the Baltimore & DC area, I can understand why those days may be preferable over the hot, sticky, humid Baltimore & DC days of Summer.

Margaret, thank you so much for participating in this month's fun Summer Challenge! You had me laughing because I could relate to EVERY word!! Here in the South, we have a term for people like us—we're "glisteners!"  That's our polite way of saying we PERSPIRE LIKE A MAN! LOL 😂

I absolutely love summertime, all the outdoor concerts, fresh produce, flowers and everything that comes with the season... but I also have a deep appreciation for air conditioning! Like you, you'll usually find me enjoying summer from the coolest spot I can find. Your story about the neck fan and the radio station made me smile, and I loved the running joke between you and Lee about moving to Florida.

And now you've convinced me that I need to try a real Baltimore snowball one of these days! Thanks again for sharing such a fun, relatable and uniquely Baltimore perspective.
