After the Meal

One of the moments that impacted me most this week didn't happen during a state association board meeting; it happened after a meal we all shared. Last night, I had dinner with my fellow Executive Board members before today's Texas REALTORS® board meeting. The conversation was wonderful, the food was excellent, and eventually dessert was served.

Then something unexpected happened. After the dishes were cleared, no one got up to leave. No one reached for their phone. No one hurried to move on to the next thing on their calendar.

What happened instead was that everyone stayed around their tables, engaging with one another. I mean, really engaging. The conversations continued—not because anyone had to, but because they genuinely wanted to. Stories were shared. Ideas were exchanged. Laughter filled the room. People listened as much as they spoke. There was no agenda left to accomplish, yet somehow that became the most meaningful part of the evening.

In today's world, that's becoming increasingly rare. We've become conditioned to rush from one commitment to the next. We often measure productivity by how quickly we can move on. Even in restaurants, it's common to see a table full of people staring into their phones instead of into each other's eyes.

But last night reminded me that some of the best leadership doesn't happen in the boardroom. It happens in unexpected and unplanned ways. And it happens when people feel comfortable enough to simply be together.

That says something profound about the culture of Texas REALTORS®. It speaks to an organization built not only on professionalism and service, but on authentic relationships. People don't linger because they have nowhere else to be. They linger because they enjoy being together. And that's a culture worth protecting.

All evening, I realized I wasn't reflecting on the business that had been discussed. I was thinking about the people around the table. Sometimes, the most important part of a meeting begins after the meal. Those unhurried conversations are where trust grows, friendships deepen, and organizations become more than just groups of people working toward a common goal.

This is where authentic community is built. And in a world that's always rushing to the next thing, perhaps the greatest gift we can give one another is simply... a little more time at the table. Perhaps give it a try tonight. Linger a little longer after the meal and discover the joy of true connection!

The best dinners are filled with delicious food, great company, and lively conversation. You know it’s truly special when you can’t bring yourself to push back from the table and head home.

Hi Paula- We talk on the phone with others, we "have lunch" with our friends but how often do we just sit and converse?   When I had the whole family over for out last 40+ family dinner, I made it a point to sit with some of my family members and actually visit with them. Often I'm so busy making sure everyone is taken care of, etc, I don't spend any time catching up with them.

It really is a remarkable thing. Wow, 40+ - now that's a feat, or should I say, a feast?

Paula, that reflects closely to a recent dinner at my parents' home.  I'd only briefly met my sister's new husband at the wedding a few weeks prior in Richmond, so it was nice to have a long post dinner chat and get to know him.  That kind of meal tends to be rather rare nowadays.

You are so correct that this happens so rarely these days. And this group was about 100 people.

Paula, that is really cool, and would have loved to listen to that natural conversation because everyone WANTED to.

That's right, Joan. People genuinely wanted to linger. It was wonderful.

Good morning, Paula... having been raised in a European environment, I am totally tuned into the habit of sitting around a dinner table and talking long after a meal is finished. We Americans don't do that as much... either with our families and friends or our business colleagues.

We need to adopt more of that European environment for sure. Good for the soul.

Staying and chatting after a meal in a restaurant doesn't happen because the restaurant wants their table back (at least here in the USA). But if the opportunity arises in other settings, and everyone stays to chat, that is priceless!

For us, we were at a conference, so we had the private room to ourselves, which I believe lent to the relaxed atmosphere.

I so enjoyed this moment, and it truly is a rare thing amongst a group of realtors.

Good morning Paula. People lingered of their own free will and listened more than they spoke. Minds were opened and ideas exchanged. Much was unknowingly accomplished. What a successful meal. Enjoy your day.

It really was a wonderful experience. And it was close to about 100 realtors and staff.
