Wordless Wednesday…Prehistoric Creatures
When you live in FL, you learn quickly that any body of water could have alligators. On one of our early fishing trips in the Everglades, they were a little too close to our boat for comfort. When you look into the water and see two eyes slowly sinking below the water…you know it’s time to go!!!
When we walked at Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach, the boardwalk was just a few feet above the water so we had a good view of the birds, turtles, and yes…alligators.
During mating season, the eerie deep bellow made by the male alligators is chilling. Below are two gators canoodling at the start of the mating season.
The female gator builds a ground nest of dirt, grass, decaying leaves, and sticks. The eggs are buried in this, and the decaying leaves act as a compost pile. The heat generated by this helps to incubate the eggs.
During mating season we had fun searching (from a distance) for the nests.
