Is Your Brain Leaking?

By

During our day to day activities, we try to do everything, without nterruptions.  How often do we start something and get interrupted several times?  How often do you think our brains are sidestepped into another task?  All the time.

Ask yourself if that happens to you and what you can do about it.

When we get sidetracked and start something new, it's as if your brain is leaking.  To get back to what you WERE doing, you have to start all over.  It's a big waste of time.

What steps can you take to fix these interruptions?   Thoughts?

This is so true! I've found that time blocking and turning off notifications for short periods helps me stay focused and actually finish what I start.

Definitely!  I saw a post that went into this in depth, but I didn't want to drag this out.  Most people have thoughts on this subject and how to avoid it.  But the phrase, "is your brain leaking" came to mind so I went with it!  Thank you for commenting Lise Howe !

Hi Jan- I agree. Studies have shown that we cannot multi-task even though we think we can. It's harder on our brains to jump back and forth.

For sure Kathy Streib !  And as technology has advanced, it's not as easy to stay on task!

Getting sidetracked does occur and can cause a major interruption to the original task, making it far longer to accomplish. Shutting off the rest and maintaining a hard focus will allow one to be more productive.

True Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 !  It's easy to get distracted and then try to remember where we were on another task!

Good morning Jan. While not foolproof, as emergencies do arise, time blocking works well and improves efficiency. Enjoy your day.

For sure Wayne Martin .  I used to do that, but I don't as much.  Keeping appointments in the early morning hours is best for me this time of year in Arizona!

I just focus on one thing at a time. If I'm trying to get something done, I don't let non-emergencies get in the way.

Good for you Kat Palmiotti !  I make lists and try to get everything done on my list, whicih helps me to focus.  There are so many distractions these days!

I always tell folks to watch out for the time bandits. They will rob you of your time and interrupt your flow. Don't let the time bandits get you!

LOL, okay Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty ! I'll make sure not to let that happen.  In reality, I focus on lists, but day to day distractions happen.  My brain goes "squirrel!"

Hi Jan,
Interruptions are definitely one of the biggest productivity killers because they interrupt our thinking. One advantage of being retired and living alone (which will change soon) is that I'm rarely interrupted unless it's a notification ding on my phone or an actual call.
