I am Blessed to Spend Time With my Parents

Life has been busy lately.  I am visiting/helping my parents for the summer.  They are getting older, and I am trying to spend as much time as possible with them, as I know one day I will not be able to spend time with them.

The downside to this is that time to write blog posts has been pushed aside.  I apologize for this, but I know when they leave this earth, I won't be wishing I had spent more time blogging.

There is a balancing act between family, friends, and work.  When parents are aging and need help, the other two get pushed aside.  It isn't fun to say, but it is a fact.

My brothers take care of my parents when I am not here in the winter.  Each brother takes care of one parent.  In the summer, I try to take the responsibility off their shoulders.  Where it gets hard for me is that they are divorced, so there are two households to work with.  It can get to be a lot, and I get overwhelmed at times.

With my own health problems, I have to watch that I don't overdo it helping my parents.  Thankfully, my brothers understand.

I am also finding that since I am single, I am able to do activities with my parents that my brothers can't do.  I am very grateful I have this time with them.  I actually see my parents more than when I lived here in Idaho.

I am just finding it hard to balance my responsibilities and what my parents need from me.

Any suggestions?

Hello Candy... there is no magic solution to your situation. As with other things in life, you can only do as much as you can. I believe the "trick" is to accept what limitations there are and not feel guilty once you've determined what it is you can give in terms of time to parents, friends, and work.

What a heartfelt share, Candy Stevens, EA. Your time with your parents sounds both tender and tiring, and the way you’ve laid it all out brings a quiet clarity to what so many of us juggle. Thanks for opening the door to your world a bit. It made me smile and nod along.

Hi Candy- It sounds to me as if you have your priorities in line!  Family first...you can write posts when you have the time. We'll be here!  When I was younger I wish I'd spent more time with my parents and other family members. We got together but when you live in the same town and work during the week, it's too easy to take the time you have with them for granted.

Good evening Candy,

It is hard to handle the complexities of taking care of aging parents especially when they are divorced. You have to find a balance that fits you and work it. You do what you can and then some and then take any guilt off the table for not doing more.

Candy Stevens, EA no matter the circumstances it is a blessing to still have your parents.  Both mine and my wife's parents have passed away and they are missed.

Thank you Nina Hollander, Broker .  I have to find a way to set those limits.  I always worry about hurting their feelings.

Candy Stevens, EA I think, Candy, that setting expectations with family is as important as with clients. And if done nicely no one takes offense. They might not realize how many directions you're being pulled in.

Thank you Kathy Streib .  Family is very important to me.  I know many times I put my family before responsibilities, and this is where I need to stop!  No one else is going to pay my bills for me.

Have a wonderful day!

The guilt for me is bad Dorie Dillard Austin TX .  After my heart surgery, I realized that when I'm on my deathbed, I don't want to be saying..I wish I had spent more time with so and so.  This has made it so that I am not doing a good job of balancing spending time with my family and work.

George Souto I know I am blessed to still have both my parents.  Many of my friends have lost their parents.
