650 Military Avenue: I’m Going Back Again

Some houses you sell and never see again.

And then there is 650 Military Avenue in Pikesville.

Today I am going back to see this house, and before I even walk through the door, I started thinking about how much history I already have there.

My relationship with 650 Military began when my longtime friend Arlene bought the house.

I was her buyer's agent. Arlene and I had known each other for years before real estate was part of our relationship.

Years later, I came back to 650 Military in a different role. This time I listed it. It was such an unusual house. Three finished levels, six bedrooms, three and a half baths, three kitchens, and private entrances on each level.

It offered all kinds of possibilities for a large family, a blended family, multiple generations, guests, or anyone who wanted lots of separate space.

And we found the right buyers.

That's the photo above. Look at those smiles. They are holding the keys to their new home. But getting those keys into their hands gave me another 650 Military story. The home inspection revealed that the roof needed to be completely replaced. The buyers wanted it finished before they moved in, and settlement was coming fast.  We had the right house. We had the right buyers. We had the right seller. What we didn't have was TIME!

The old roof had to come off down to the studs. Three skylights had to be replaced. A crew of about a dozen contractors worked together, and we estimated something like 63,000 nails were removed. Here is the article with a video of start-to-finish roof installation

 And somehow, it all got done the same week as settlement. But the story didn't end with that settlement.

I later helped Arlene with another home, one that became a successful residential homecare business. During COVID, remarkably, not one resident or staff member contracted the virus. That says so much about the extraordinary care with which that facility was managed. When Arlene eventually moved out of state to care for her own family, I sold that property too.

And my connection with the buyers of 650 Military continued as well. This past year, I was involved again when they bought a brand-new construction townhouse, a home that is just perfect for their work, their family, and this next stage of their lives.

Which brings me right back to 650 Military Avenue. It is now seven years since that 2019 settlement. The house has been totally rehabbed, and today I am going back to see what it has become. Will I be listing 650 Military Avenue again? I don't know yet.  But maybe that's what I love most about this story. Real estate isn't always one transaction with a beginning and an end. Sometimes you help someone buy a house, later sell that house, help the next owners buy it, and years later help those owners move on to their next home.

The houses change. The families change. Their needs change.

And sometimes the same Realtor® gets the privilege of being invited back for the next chapter. Today, I'm going back to 650 Military Avenue. I can't wait to walk through that door.
