Embracing the Season You're In
"We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking."…… Father Richard Rohr
I recently celebrated a major birthday, and after all the fun, laughter, and celebrating, I found myself doing something I didn't expect...
Reflecting.
Not so much on the number of years, but on the season of life I'm living right now.
And I've realized something.
Life doesn't always unfold the way we imagine it will.
It's messy.
It's sometimes chaotic and confusing.
There are unexpected turns, difficult seasons, wonderful surprises, and moments that take our breath away.
And somehow, through all of it, we keep moving forward.
I've come to appreciate that we don't always have to have everything figured out.
Sometimes we simply have to live our way through it.
And somewhere along the way, our experiences change us.
They teach us.
They give us perspective.
They help us understand what really matters.
As I look at my own life today, I can honestly say I'm happy.
I'm fulfilled.
I love the life I'm living.
I'm surrounded by family and wonderful friends. I have work that continues to challenge and inspire me, colleagues I respect and enjoy, and a community that means so much to me.
Does anything concern me?
Of course.
I worry about the world and the direction we're headed.
And as a mother and grandmother, I think about the world my children and grandchildren will inherit.
But then I remind myself of something important.
I've watched my children grow into capable, smart, resourceful adults. I've watched them raise their own children to think for themselves, use their individual gifts, and find their own way in the world.
I can't control every season they'll encounter.
But I can trust the people I've helped raise to navigate those seasons.
And perhaps that's another lesson that comes with getting older.
We don't have to control the future to have faith in it.
Sometimes we simply have to embrace the season we're in, appreciate what it has taught us, and trust that the next season will bring its own lessons and possibilities.
I'm beginning to think that's one of the gifts of growing older.
You stop measuring life by what's ahead...
and start appreciating where you are.
One Lesson I've Learned
Every season of life has something to teach us. Don't spend so much time worrying about the next one that you miss the beauty of the one you're living right now.
Question of the Week
What season of life are you in right now, and what is this season teaching you?
I'd truly love to hear your thoughts.
Until next Monday...
Keep learning, keep growing, and Be the Difference.
