Recently, my grandson and his wife bought a home, and I had a front-row seat to watch the entire journey!
They worked with my daughter, Melissa Stout, as they searched for the right home. For about a month, they looked without finding the one. Then they made the decision to get serious and really focus on what they wanted.
And then...it happened.
One Friday, the right home popped up on the market. Within two hours, they were walking through the front door. They knew almost immediately, this was the one!
But finding the right house was only the beginning.
Both Melissa and I watched them experience something I have seen buyers go through for 35 years: the emotional roller coaster of buying a home.
It usually goes something like this...
🏡 Excitement — Buying a home is exciting! Looking at homes can be fun, and it’s easy to imagine yourself living in each one.
🤔 Reality Sets In — Then perhaps the homes you're seeing aren't quite what you expected. Maybe nothing feels right, or what you want doesn't fit the budget you had in mind.
😬 “Maybe We Should Settle?” — After looking for a while, buyers sometimes begin wondering if they should compromise because they haven't found the one.
✨ Then It Happens! — The right home appears, and suddenly everything changes. You can see yourself there. You can imagine your life there. You know!
😱 The Offer — Now comes excitement, panic, optimism, and apprehension...sometimes all at the same time!
🎉 The Offer Is Accepted! — Celebration!
And then...
😳 “What Have We Done?”
Welcome to buyer’s remorse.
Did we make the right decision? Did we pay too much? Can we really afford this?
I can assure you, these thoughts are more common than most buyers realize.
🔎 The Inspection — Now every little issue can suddenly feel huge. But remember: no house is perfect. The important question becomes, What really needs to be addressed, and what is simply part of owning a home?
📋 The Appraisal and Loan Approval — More waiting. More paperwork. Underwriting. Final approval. Clear to close. More documents to review.
Just when you think you've made it through the roller coaster, there are a few more hills and curves!
🔑 The Final Walk-Through — Suddenly, it becomes real.
This is going to be our home!
During my grandson's final walk-through, they discovered the air conditioning wasn't cooling properly. One call was made to the seller, and an HVAC technician was there immediately to make the repair. Even at the very end, there can be a surprise, but that doesn't mean the journey is falling apart.
🎊 Closing Day — Celebration, excitement, a little disbelief...and then the realization of just how many moving pieces there are before you're completely settled into your new home.
Buying a home is about so much more than finding the right number of bedrooms, bathrooms, or the perfect kitchen.
It is an emotional journey.
The good news? The ups and downs are normal.
After walking alongside buyers for 35 years, I've learned to recognize the moments when excitement turns into panic, when doubt takes over, and when buyers simply need someone to remind them to take a deep breath and focus on the bigger picture.
Because looking beyond the front door means understanding that buying a home isn't just about the house you choose.
It's about navigating the journey that gets you there, and knowing you don't have to ride the roller coaster alone. ❤️
