If you’ve noticed more friends talking about farmers’ markets lately, you’re not imagining it.
With the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak making many of us think a little more carefully about where our fresh produce comes from, some Austin-area shoppers are turning to local farmers’ markets for their weekend grocery runs.
And honestly… there are worse Saturday morning traditions! ☀️🍅
Farmers’ markets offer something I’ve always loved about Austin, the opportunity to meet the people who grow and make our food, learn where it comes from, and support local farmers and small businesses along the way.
That said, buying local doesn’t automatically mean produce is free from foodborne illness. Cyclospora is a parasite that can spread through contaminated food, and health officials have linked some cases in the current outbreak to iceberg lettuce. Texas DSHS notes that previous outbreaks have also involved other imported produce.
So whether you shop at a farmers’ market or your neighborhood grocery store, wash fresh produce thoroughly under running water and follow current food-safety guidance.

🍑 One More Reason I Love Farmers’ Markets
For me, it’s not just about the produce.
It’s about knowing your community.
Knowing the people who grow your food.
Supporting local businesses.
Discovering something new.
And sometimes coming home with something you never intended to buy! 😂
That’s part of what makes Austin such a special place to live.
