Dated Home Features That Can Turn Off Potential Buyers
Do you remember going with your parents to your great-aunt Ethel’s home? You liked Aunt Ethel, but
her home always seemed OLD. There were the doilies on the arms of her couch that kept slipping off and the heavy curtains that made the rooms dark.
If you’re selling your home, here are some dated features that could turn off potential buyers—even if your home is impeccably clean and well maintained.
- Old-fashioned wallpaper- yes, it’s back in style, but not like you think!
-Heavy and Dated Drapes- It’s better to remove them and let the light in! And if you have the old mini-blinds that are yellowed from the sun, or (listen-up Florida) vertical blinds, or heavy valences…it’s time to remove them.
-Dark Wood-It has its place; however, if you have dark wood paneling and heavy dark furniture, it’s time for a change.
If you have dark built-ins, you can lighten the look without painting them. Place a mirrored object on a shelf, use light colored objects on the shelves, and add under-shelf lighting.
Use under-cabinet lighting!
-Update Your Paint Colors and Remove the Popcorn Ceilings!
-Dated Light Fixtures-If your home still has the builder-basic dome lights, heavy track lighting, or a strip of light bulbs in the bathrooms, it’s time to update them.
-Countertops- These can be a budget-friendly way of updating your home. That speckled granite we loved twenty years ago may need a facelift.
-Flooring- Worn, damaged carpet needs to go, as does carpeting in the bathrooms.
-Appliances- They don’t have to be top of the line but if they’re avocado or gold, it’s time to update them.
-Furniture- Too much and too heavy can detract from the feel of the room. You don’t have to buy new furniture, especially if you plan on taking it to your new home. Edit what you have!
-Bathrooms-It would be so nice if the big jacuzzi tub wasn’t there, but if it’s not in your budget, there are other items you can consider. You can replace the fixtures, including the lights… freshen your shower with a new door, remove the builder-basic mirror and replace it with a smaller one, or frame it!
