Proud to share that I recently published an article in the Forbes Business Council, writing about something I think every real estate professional wrestles with: protecting your balance, fiercely.
Here's the thing I've learned running MyOutDesk for over 18 years, and something I know rings true for anyone in our industry: balance isn't a state you find and keep. It's more like love. You don't fall into it once and stay there forever. You have to actively protect it, every single day, or imbalance creeps back in.
Since we're all in real estate, you know exactly what I mean. The business rewards hustle. Being "always on" can feel like the price of admission. But being busy isn't the same as being important, and burnout doesn't make you a better agent, broker, or team leader. It just makes you tired.
In the article, I break down two things that have made the biggest difference for me:
1. Focus and intention. Swap your to-do list for a "to dominate" list. For every task, ask: does this actually have to be done, and who can own it? Then price your time. Divide your annual income by 2,080 hours and you'll quickly see when you're spending hundred-dollar hours on five-dollar tasks, like admin work you could hand off instead of your next listing appointment or client call.
2. Time protection. I keep consistent hours and guard them like anything else worth protecting. I schedule do-nothing days with my family. And when I catch myself feeling overwhelmed, I don't just push through, I ask "how did I create this?" That question turns pain into a signal instead of a spiral.
For agents and brokers, this isn't abstract. It's the difference between a business that owns you and one you actually own.
Would love to hear how you all protect your time and energy in this business. Check out my full piece here: https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbesbusinesscouncil/2026/08/12/why-you-need-to-protect-balance-fiercely/
