Garbage cans attract critters. Even living in the heart of town I've had to dealt with racoons, squirrels, and yes, skunks too. Thankfully no encounters with bears. 🐻
Like Joe, I just avoid them. They do go away eventually.
I don't know if every community has done away with the good old metal garbage can but it seems most have gone to a system where the garbage man doesn't even get out of the truck.
Interestingly enough our neighborhood has discovered that squirrels can, and do, chew threw the thick plastic covers. I would assume that a bear would have no problem opening up these cans as well. I'm guessing they are pretty much skunk proof BUT the biggest problem is, of course, people leaving the cover open and scavenger birds getting into the trash.
