Are you AND your pets disaster ready?
When disaster strikes, having a plan for your furry, feathered or finned family members is just as important as having one for yourself. Being prepared comes down to two main things: knowing your nearest shelter and having a pre-packed emergency pet kit ready to grab at a moment's notice.
What to Bring to an Emergency Shelter
Emergency shelters don't stock pet supplies, so you'll need to bring everything your pet needs. Make sure to bring a crate or carrier that’s large enough for your pet to comfortably stand up and turn around in.
Pack your emergency pet kit with:
- Food & Water: A 14-day supply of food and water in sealed containers (plus a manual can opener if needed).
- Gear: Leash, collar, and bowls.
- ID & Records: An ID tag with your current contact info, vaccine records, microchip number, photos of your pet, and your vet's contact details. Tip: Make sure your pet's microchip info is up to date before severe weather hits!
- Comforts: Bedding, towels, toys, and treats.
- Health & Hygiene: Medications, a pet first-aid kit, grooming supplies, and cleaning supplies.
- Cat Essentials: Cat litter in sealed containers and a litter pan.
- Need to get your pet microchipped? You can schedule an appointment through your vet or with the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Oʻahu Pet-Friendly Shelters
All emergency shelters on Oʻahu are pet-friendly, but open locations can change last-minute depending on the storm. Check local radio and TV broadcasts during an emergency to see which locations are open, or check out the City & County of Honolulu's online map of all 38 potential refuge locations here.
Most importantly: never leave your pets behind. If it’s not safe for you to stay home, it isn’t safe for them either.
