Late summer in South Carolina means fresh peaches, and there are few better ways to enjoy them than in a bowl of homemade peach ice cream.
Peaches are one of those fruits that taste even better when you buy them locally and let them ripen on the kitchen counter. When they are soft, sweet, and juicy, they are perfect for homemade ice cream.
This simple recipe doesn't require many ingredients.
Homemade Peach Ice Cream
Ingredients
3 cups fresh peaches, peeled and chopped
1 cup sugar, divided
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Pinch of salt
Directions
Place the chopped peaches in a bowl with 1/2 cup of the sugar and the lemon juice. Stir well and let them sit for about 30 minutes. This gives the peaches time to release their natural juices.
Mash some of the peaches with a fork or potato masher, leaving plenty of small pieces for texture.
In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, heavy cream, whole milk, vanilla, and salt. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Add the peaches and their juice to the cream mixture.
Pour everything into your ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's directions. When it finishes churning, you can enjoy it immediately as soft-serve ice cream or freeze it for a few hours for a firmer texture.
A Simple Summer Treat
Homemade peach ice cream is one of those desserts that does not need much dressing up. A bowl on the porch after supper is about as good as it gets.
You can also serve it with fresh peach slices, pound cake, or even a warm peach cobbler if you want a real summer dessert.
August always feels like the time to enjoy the last full stretch of summer before schedules change and fall begins to creep in. Fresh peaches will not be around forever, so this is a good excuse to pick up a few extra at the farmers market.
Sometimes the simplest foods are the ones we remember the longest, and homemade peach ice cream certainly belongs on that list.
