If you’re preparing to view houses in search of your new home, don’t forget the importance of looking beyond simple first impressions.

You’ll need to pinpoint early any issues that could affect the property in the long run, saving you time, money and a potentially wrong decision.

Here are five things to keep in mind.

Don’t be fooled by the decor. It doesn’t really matter how the current residents have decorated and furnished the property. What’s more important are things like the space’s overall layout, structural elements and light; these are much harder to change than the decor.

Make sure there’s no water damage. There can be hidden signs of water damage that can point to major issues such as plumbing problems, damp areas or leaks. If you see stains, paint peeling or signs of mold, let these ring alarm bells.

Keep an eye out for cracks. Small cracks may be nothing, but larger cracks in walls could be a sign of serious structural issues. Be on the lookout.

Check the windows are in order. Working windows that open and close properly are vital for keeping the house free of drafts, properly insulated and helping to regulate humidity. Good windows can help with energy efficiency and lowering bills.

Bad smells? Bad news. If you can smell something off, there could be hidden issues with the drainage, mold problems or other defects. Always trust your nose!

In our age of environmental uncertainty, we’re all too often hearing stories of our planet’s wonderful wildlife becoming endangered or, worse, extinct. Thankfully, though, as these species prove, it doesn’t have to be that way if we act quick enough. Here are three animals that made it back from the brink.

Giant Pandas. The iconic beloved bear, poster child for the conservation movement, had lost half its entire population to poaching and habitat loss by the 1980s. But through an extensive conservation movement as well as protections enacted by the Chinese government in the late ’80s and ’90s, since 2016 the giant panda has no longer been classified as endangered, although they do remain vulnerable.

Northern Elephant Seals. Through ruthless overhunting in the 18th and 19th centuries, the northern elephant seal was believed to be extinct. And unbelievably, when an American research group discovered there was still a tiny population alive on Guadalupe Island, they killed many of them for use as museum pieces. Thankfully, in 1922, the Mexican government outlawed the killing of elephant seals, and with the USA eventually following, they have now bounced back to more than 50,000 individuals.

Green Sea Turtles. These gorgeous creatures have faced an unfathomable number of challenges for decades through habitat loss, plastic pollution, climate change, illegal egg harvesting, destructive fishing techniques, collisions with ships and many more. But, astonishingly, conservation efforts both on global and local scales have seen their numbers return to the extent that they are now on the IUCN’s “least concern” list.

In small bowl, combine fish sauce, lime juice and brown sugar, then set aside. Heat skillet over medium heat and add oil. Sauté shallots, ginger and red pepper flakes and cook until softened.

Then add ground chicken and continue cooking while breaking up any lumps until meat is no longer pink. Remove from heat and add sauce mixture. Allow mixture to cool and then refrigerate for at least one hour. (Can be made in advance and refrigerated for up to two days.)

Stir in cilantro and onion before serving. Serve in lettuce cups with extra wedges of lime.

Investing in home security cameras is a brilliant way to protect your peace of mind, but a camera is only as good as its vantage point. To make it an effective shield for your home, you don’t need to record every square inch, but you should be sure to cover the strategic choke points. Here are the high-priority zones to maximize your home protection.

The main entrances. A surprising number of intruders simply walk right through the front, back or side doors. Position cameras above these entryways, angled downward to capture clear facial features.

Ground-floor windows. Ground-level windows are vulnerable weak spots. Placing cameras with a wide field of view near these windows deters break-ins before they start.

The driveway. Vehicles are prime targets for nighttime theft. A sturdy outdoor camera equipped with strong night vision ensures your cars remain protected under a watchful eye.

Hallways and staircases. Intruders must move through your home to find valuables. Placing indoor cameras in transitional spaces like main hallways or stairwells guarantees you track their movement even if they sneaked past an exterior lens.

Common living hubs. Central areas like the living room often house your most expensive tech, from televisions to laptops. Monitoring these high-traffic spaces keeps your highest-value assets covered.

With all of this in mind, do be sure to keep personal privacy at the forefront. Keep cameras out of private spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms, and ensure your outdoor lenses do not point directly into a neighbor’s house or yard. Also, to get the best results, mount outdoor cameras at least eight feet high to prevent tampering, and angle them just below any exterior lighting fixtures to avoid blinding the lens. With these tips, you’ll be well on the way to feeling safe and secure at home.

Normalize real apologies. Teach your children how to repair their mistakes. Move past a forced, empty "sorry" and encourage them to try and genuinely acknowledge the impact of their actions. Learning to make amends models both accountability and respect for others.

Encourage everyday gestures. Remind your children that compassion does not require big grand acts. Smiling at a stranger, sharing a toy or sitting with a classmate who is eating alone are small actions that leave a lasting impact.

Prompt their curiosity, not their judgment. Help your children to understand that everyone has their own unseen burdens. By teaching them to wonder about someone's story instead of reacting harshly to behavior that seems difficult or different, you can teach them genuine emotional intelligence.

Keep communication open. Create a safe space where they can discuss the tough stuff like schoolyard exclusion or peer pressure. Listen without immediately jumping in to fix the problem, helping them navigate complex social dynamics themselves with a grounded, caring mindset.
