Start Your “One Year From Now” Today!
You don't need to wait for New Year's Day, your birthday or some other annual marker you use to inspire new goals and change. You can start today!
Too many people are living with the pain of regret. In Real Estate alone it's:
The interest rate they didn’t take advantage of when rates were lower.
The house they didn’t buy.
The offer they went too low on and lost the property.
The move they didn’t make.
Today its the self-imposed “house arrest” of feeling trapped by a great mortgage rate, even though the house itself no longer fits their life. Life doesn't wait for your comfort zone, it expects you to get uncomfortable every now and then in order for your to grow and change; to achieve your goals.
Regret is hard. Moving forward without certainty can be hard too.
You Need To Choose Your Hard. I've written about this before -
To Be or Not To Be - remaining the same or becoming more. To move forward or stay put; both have "hard" attached to them. Choose the hard that puts you closer to where you want to be one year from today.
"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, or today." You do not get to enjoy the shade of the tree until you plant it, no matter when you start.
Maybe that means beginning the path toward homeownership. Maybe it means moving closer to work, family, or the grandchildren. Maybe it means finally buying an investment and beginning to build equity and long-term wealth.
And this isn't just about real estate.
One year from now, you can weigh exactly what you weigh today,
or you could be 25 pounds lighter. Working out is hard. Being unhealthy is hard.
Choose the hard that moves your life forward to healthy.
Saving money is hard. Being financially unprepared is hard.
Choose the hard that moves your life forward to financial freedom.
Changing careers is hard. Staying somewhere you no longer belong is hard.
Choose the hard that moves your life forward to the career you love.
Choose the hard that moves your life forward - to the achievement of your goals.

And that brings me to one of the most practical books I’ve read on turning “someday” into today: The 12 Week Year by Brian Moran.
The premise Brian introduces in his book challenges something most of us have accepted our entire lives: thinking in years may actually be slowing us down.
When we give ourselves twelve months, January becomes February, February becomes spring and suddenly we're saying, “Where did the year go?”
Moran calls this Annualized Thinking. A year feels like we have plenty of time, which makes procrastination remarkably easy.
Instead, treat 12 weeks as your year.
Twelve weeks is long enough to accomplish something meaningful, but short enough that the finish line remains clearly in sight. I perform my years this way with my long-time accountability partner. For the last 9 years we've met every other Friday for 30 minutes to discuss our 12 Week Year wins and challenges.

A few of my favorite takeaways from Brian Moran's book:
🎯 Start with vision.
Know where you're going and, more importantly, why it matters personally. Your business goals should support the life you actually want to live.
📋 A goal without a plan is just a wish.
Break the vision into measurable 12-week goals, then identify the weekly and daily actions required to get there.
⚙️ Execution beats ideas.
Most successful people don't necessarily have better ideas.
They consistently execute the important ones.
1️⃣ Focus on fewer things.
Instead of chasing ten priorities, identify the one or two things that could create the greatest impact and pursue them deliberately.
📊 Keep score.
Measure the activities you control, not just the results you hope for.
What gets measured gets managed.
🗓️ Build your ideal week before the week builds itself.
Schedule time for strategic work, routine administrative work, and the activities directly connected to your goals.
🐸 Do the difficult things first. "Eat That Frog"
Don't wait until you “feel like it.”
Important work rarely sends an engraved invitation.
👣 Take the next step.
Big goals become overwhelming when you stare at the entire journey.
Progress comes from repeatedly taking the next doable action.
🔄 Recover quickly.
You will get distracted. You will miss things. You will have lousy days.
Success isn't never getting knocked off course. It's getting back on course faster.
💪 Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
Creating something you don't currently have requires doing things you're not currently doing.
Perhaps the biggest lesson I took from The 12 Week Year is this:
You don't need January 1st to start a new year.
Your next “year” can begin this Monday. Or tomorrow. Or today.
Pick one goal, something meaningful. Give yourself 12 weeks.
Build the plan. Work the plan. Measure the execution.
Then begin another 12 weeks.
Because someday has an unfortunate habit of staying someday.
Start your “One Year From Now” today.
And tell me all about it - I'd love to hear your 12 Week Year story!
