Drain flies may be tiny, but they can quickly become a big nuisance in any home.
Recently, a client of mine had an issue with these pesky little 'buggah's'!
These fuzzy, moth‑like insects thrive in moist, stagnant environments, especially inside kitchen sinks, bathroom drains, floor drains, and even unused pipes. When organic sludge builds up inside the drain, it creates the perfect breeding ground for them.
The first signs of a problem often include small flies hovering near sinks, lingering around showers, or resting on nearby walls. You may also notice slow drainage or a musty odor, both indicators that organic buildup is present.
To eliminate drain flies, you need to remove their breeding source. This means cleaning the drain thoroughly: scrub the pipe walls, flush with boiling water, and use an enzyme‑based cleaner to break down organic matter. Many homeowners find success with Green Gobbler (sold at Home Depot), as its enzyme formula helps dissolve the gunk where drain flies lay eggs. It doesn’t kill adult flies instantly, but it does remove the environment they rely on, which stops the infestation at its source.
