Saturday Soundness ~ Potential Side Effects of GLP-1

This past week, I put out a post to provide an overview of this whole GLP phenomenon. It seemed to spring onto the scene, and before long, everyone was talking about it and jumping on the bandwagon to try these products. As with any new medication or treatment, it is wise to do a little homework before deciding if this is the right product for you.

To be clear, I am one of the sceptics when it comes to allopathic modalities. Throughout my personal health journey, pharmaceuticals don't do well in my body. And because I believe it is important to seek answers to the root of a health issue, I have tended to seek out other ways to stay healthy without prescriptions.

I will say right here that I honor and respect each person's own health journey. If you are from a different mindset, no worries. This post is not meant to shame anyone for their medical choices. And the word "choice" is intentional. We all have a choice when it comes to our health.

When the world jumped onto the GLP bandwagon, I stood back and gathered information in order to understand what this product does and what the possible long-term use might be. Listed below are the most common side effects that are being reported from the use of these products:

     1. Digestive Issues: GLP-1 medications slow how quickly the stomach empties, which helps people feel full longer but can also cause digestive discomfort.

      2. Dehydration: This is due to the fact that because people are not hungry, so they tend to overlook keeping themselves properly hydrated. This, of course, can cause a myriad of issues for the body.

        3. Hair Loss: Rapid weight loss—not necessarily the medication itself—can trigger temporary hair shedding. Think about it. Anything that causes the body to shed weight quickly is also causing loss of collagen, elasticity of the skin, and hair follicles on the skin are affected.

        4. Gallbladder & Pancreatitis: These drugs act quickly in the body, which affects those organs that are digestion-related. This drug doesn't simply affect the stomach; it will affect every cell in your body, just as any other medication will.

        5. Vision: People with diabetes who experience rapid improvements in blood sugar may notice temporary worsening of diabetic eye disease. Regular eye care is essential for monitoring.

    6. Thyroid: Some GLP-1 medications carry a boxed warning because animal studies showed an increased risk of certain thyroid tumors. It is not known whether this occurs in humans. However, many users of these products have experienced lumps in the neck, voice hoarseness, and difficulty in swallowing.

       7. Overall nutritional health: Because these drugs keep the appetite low, many people are so excited about the weight loss that they lose sight of the important nutritional requirements for their body. They are not consuming enough vitamin- and mineral-rich foods, and the end result is: yes, you are thinner, but at what cost to your overall health?

Because these drugs have not been widely used until just recently, the long-term effects are still to be determined. My mind races to the whole Phen-Phen era. Remember all of the lawsuits and those who lost their lives?  My next post on this topic will cover the current findings of long-term use.

For now, stay healthy, take care of yourself, and LIV2DAY!

Dr. Paula McDonald you've mentioned seven serious side effects of GLP1 in your post. Just one of them is enough for me to say "I don't think so."

Me as well, Nina. Way too many red flags.

Dr. Paula McDonald, thank you for sharing such a thorough and thoughtful overview of these potential side effects. Doing the homework beforehand is definitely wise when it comes to health and wellness decisions!

This is such a big issue. I see both sides of it. On one side being overweight by 30lbs or more is an epidemic in the USA. It causes many of the biggest issues in healthcare today. Losing weight not only lowers heart and cancer related risks, it helps self esteem for many. Those side effects are real. When a doctor schedules even a simple procedure, (say a colon screening) they need to wait twice as long for the clear out to work. That can cause all kinds of internal issues. DO NOT USE THESE DRUGS TO GET INTO BIKINI SHAPE. They are not made for losing 10 lbs.

Thank you for 'weighing' in! LOL - pun intended!

I was on GLP's for about a year, and lost weight, then our insurance said it would not cover it any longer. Since then I put back on all the weight I lost and more. I have as I aged found it harder and harder to lose weight. Things I did in the past that worked simply do not anymore. My brother was put on them and has lost a ton of weight, but he also lost a lot of muscle mass too.

Yes, muscle mass is a concern because it also affects cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

Hi Dr Paula McDonald,

Great post as my wife and I were just talking about this. Our neighbor was just put on it as he is unable to exercise and has put on a lot of weight. My wife is very worried about the long term effects as she said it hasn't been studied for the long term effect on the body. She knows a few people that have taken it and lost weight but as soon as they went off all the weight came right back on. My wife was a personal trainer at one point in her life and she says diet and exercise are best not only for physical effects, but for the mind too.

Yes, Steve, that is what I have been seeing with those who are taking these meds. Staying on them for years at a time is not a good idea.

I think that I am of the same health mentality as you, and I would never even consider using a GLP myself, haha.

I believe that we align in this area for sure, Brian.

Hi Paula! I have so many friends (and my husband) who have used the GLP-1's. After meeting with my husband and his internist, I got great tips to pass along to any and all of my friends who are thinking of trying it. At one point, my entire book club (there are 20-22 of us) was on it but, ME! LOL

I will add your tips to my 'warning' about these drugs. This is what I have been sharing with them:

1. Zepbound & Mounjaro (Tirzepatides) are long-term proven drugs that treat diabetes & sleep apnea. My husband had amazing results with both diagnoses. He is no longer on Metformin for his blood sugar and sleeps SO much more restfully now. (I discuss those two drugs specifically because the O and W drugs are more unknown to me.)

2. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! Ask your doctor how many ounces of water you need since you will not be eating as much food and most food contains some water. You also are not thirsty with these GLP-1s. So you will HAVE to MAKE yourself drink water!

3. Be sure your vitamin intake is sufficient and speak with your nutritionist about supplements. If you don't have one or know a nutritionist, your doctor can and will recommend one.

4. Step up your protein and get used to doing that because THAT is what is going to help you keep it off after you have reached your goal and been weaned from your GLP-1.

One thing that Ray's Internist taught me that I initially saw in friends who did it--when they lost weight with the drug. Some picked the weight right back up very quickly. He said those taking GLP-1s need to be tapered off of the medication over the course of a year, sometimes 2 years.

I think most of my friends simply learned how to EAT RIGHT again! Thankfully none of them have had any side effects and those who struck out the first time were successful the second go-round!

Paula, I have a friend on a GLP-1 right now, and just sent her a text, will ask if she is having any side effects.   I am sure she knew about these before starting.
