✨ THE VIEW FROM HERE — Friendships Shift

Friendships are funny things. Some begin when we’re young and somehow stretch across more than 50 years, thousands of miles and countless versions of ourselves. Others begin almost incidentally—through a mutual friend, a business relationship or even an online community—and quietly become something far more meaningful than we ever expected.

And then there are friendships that change, soften or simply become less present in our everyday lives.

The older I get, the more I understand that friendships shift. That doesn’t necessarily mean something went wrong. Sometimes life simply moved—and we moved with it.

One of my dearest friends lives in Lake Havasu. We have been friends for more than 50 years, and although many miles separate us, there are moments when she feels as close as the person sitting beside me.

After my recent surgery, I was finally released to begin putting weight on my leg again. Naturally, about three days later, I overdid it. Apparently, being told I can do something and exercising restraint while doing it are two entirely different skills!

By the end of the day, I was tired, hurting and not remotely interested in making dinner—which is saying quite a lot because I LOVE to cook.

Then my phone buzzed. “Check your front porch.”

There it was: a Spoonful of Comfort care package from my friend across the country. She hadn’t seen how tired I was. I hadn’t told her that cooking dinner felt like one task too many that evening. She just knew. As any good “sister” would.

That is one of the gifts of a friendship that has lasted for decades. You may not be involved in every detail of one another’s daily lives, but somewhere along the way, you learned each other’s hearts. Time and distance may change the rhythm of the friendship, but they don’t necessarily change its depth. Then there are the friendships we never saw coming.

One woman came into my life because she was a dear friend of my best friend. For years, I knew her largely through that relationship. Then, during the past 15 years, she also became my client. Somewhere along the way, the connection shifted.

She was no longer simply my best friend’s friend or a client I enjoyed working with. She became my friend—someone I trusted with many of my secrets, someone whose presence in my life I now treasure and someone I never expected to know in quite this way. What began as a friendship once removed became a beautiful relationship all its own.

And then there is the Rain.

When most of us first arrived on ActiveRain, we expected to learn more about real estate, improve our businesses and meet other professionals around the country. I’m 100% sure that we never expected to find genuine, lifelong friendships here—but, that is exactly what happened.

In 2014, Ray and I had just finished building our home and hadn’t even settled in yet. Nevertheless, 15 or so of some of my dearest friends—all friendships formed right here in the Rain—traveled to Charlotte for a meet-up that lasted a couple of days.

Think about that. Fifteen people who first came into my life through an online real estate community traveled to my city, show up at my doorstep and gathered in our brand-new home. By then, they were no longer merely names beneath blog posts, profile photographs on a screen or colleagues exchanging comments. They were dear friends. ActiveRain may have introduced us, but friendship is what made them come to Charlotte.

That gathering remains one of my favorite examples of how friendships can begin where we least expect them. A shared professional community became something personal, lasting and real. Over the years, we celebrated successes, supported one another through difficult times, shared plenty of laughter and became woven into one another’s lives.

Perhaps that is one of the loveliest surprises of getting older. We may assume that our closest friendships have already been formed, that the circle is more or less complete and that anyone new will remain somewhere near its edges.

But life occasionally introduces someone and says, “You’re going to need this person.” And sometimes, it is right.

Of course, not every friendship grows closer. Some become quieter. Some change because of marriage, children, careers, caregiving, illness, retirement or geography. Some belong beautifully to one chapter of our lives but don’t follow us into the next one in quite the same way.

That doesn’t mean those friendships weren’t real or important.

Perhaps we place too much pressure on friendships when we expect every one of them to remain exactly as they began. We change. Our circumstances change. The amount of time and energy we have to give changes. The friendships that surround us naturally change, too.

Some friends are woven through our entire story. Some arrive in the middle and become indispensable. Some step back but never entirely leave our hearts. Some begin as a photograph and a name in the comments section of a blog. And some appear on our front porch—metaphorically or quite literally—at exactly the moment we need them.

The view from here is that friendship isn’t always measured by proximity, frequency or how neatly someone fits into our lives. Sometimes it is measured by history. Sometimes by trust. Sometimes by the miles someone travels to celebrate with us. And sometimes by a perfectly timed act of kindness.

Friendships shift. And every now and then, when they do, they become something even more beautiful than we ever expected.

Good morning Debe Maxwell, CRS ,

I loved you post on friendships shifting. My Geno always referred to the shift as a change of seasons. People come into our life for a reason and sometimes its for a season. Seasons change but we appreciate and love each one.

What was Geno's ancestry, Dorie Dillard Austin TX? This 'seasons of life' is something that I just picked up in the last few years and I can't, for the life of me, remember where or when I heard it first. And, yes to being grateful for each season in our lives.

Such a lovely post, Debe! And I know exactly the kind of friendships you are talking about. I met up with my High School friends during my visit home, and my best friend of 35 years. Despite an ocean separating us for the last 23 years, our friendships have endured. And then there are the ones that have faded, the friendships I've mourned. But, with age comes wisdom, and I now understand: some people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. No matter the type, they are all valuable, teaching us something, or leaving a lasting mark.

Oh, thank you, Steffy Hristova! She's such a dear friend and always makes my heart smile when I hear her voice or receive a message from her. I am truly blessed to not have a natural born sister but, to have her as a chosen one!

It's aways the ones that drift away without a reason that perplex me. Sadly my husband's passing 2 years ago severed ties with many. Not sure why I am not worthy anymore but it is what it is. I never let it sadden me, but curiosity kills the cat lol.

Oh, Corinne Guest, that is totally THEIR loss! Like you though, I would want to understand the 'why' behind the disappearance. Perhaps they simply don't know what to say to you? Perhaps they are a 'couples-only' pair? You have so much to offer, it's amazing to me that they would let your friendship fall to the wayside. Did I say, I'd be curious too!!

This is so well put. It is something I have been thinking about for the past few weeks and the fact some friends are just there for a season and not for a lifetime can feel upsetting, but once we accept it, life becomes more fun and enjoyable.

Your post is likely what got me thinking about this! Then my friend sent her Spoonful of Comfort gift and I realized I really needed to write this!

One thing--you know I always find the sliver lining: A friendship waining gives you more time to spend with those who do love and adore you. Focus on them and let your heart open up to them!

This is so beautiful, Debe. And yes, just like life changes, so do the people who float in and out.

Debe Maxwell, CRS

Thank you so much, Dr. Paula McDonald! Those who float out during a divorce are always questioned as well. The only thing I can say is that sometimes it's also a bit awkward for the friends who lose a couple who were always a pair. I've experienced that with my friends who divorced. You love both but, you feel like you have to choose.

Your post reminded me of a dear friend who is no longer here. In 2020, my husband and myself, suffered through 4 immediate family deaths beginning with my father. My dear friend Laura sent me a down comforter, totally unannounced.

I have several friends who I call "low maintenance." These friends are those usually miles away that can be reached and immediately it seems like we just talked.

Debe, some ties last a long time ago.  If our new home had been finished, I was to attend a get together with some of my Annapolis classmates, go to a Navy football game, eat some grabs and catch up with people I haven't seen in 40+ years (for the most part), and yet, it would be like we all just blinked (and gained a lot of weight, gray hair and creaky joints)!

Meeting other Rainers in person has almost always been a "the way I know them online is the way they are in person", and you and the rest of that picture proved that over and over.  Great sharing of information is one of the hallmarks of this community, and the friendships are a natural by-product if we let it happen.

Sep 03, 2026 01:30 PM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Well, soon you WILL be in your new home and you will be able to attend an Annapolis reunion with your forever friends, Bill. Those are the most amazing friendships--just pick right up like you didn't miss years between seeing one another. And yes, with the extra weight, gray hair and creaky joints!

Would you have ever imagined the friendships that developed here in the Rain? I am so very thankful that I finally got the courage to comment on a post and then write one! What a great time our fun group had and all the while, we were learning more than we ever imagined we would. And, we all saved our businesses during The Great Recession too! I will forever be thankful for our group and the amazing friendships forged within it.

Me either, Bill! I totally agree. If not for the people, it would be so easy to just post on our websites and move on. Friendships are far more important--especially as we age a little! Liz and Bill Spear

Debe my wife has a friend that she has been best friends with for about 60 years.  They live on opposite coasts, but you would never know that by their friendship.  When my wife had open heart surgery she flew across country without being ask, to be with my wife and assist her in her recovery.  Friendships like that are not planned, they just happen, and hard to explain why.

Hi Debe- simply beautiful.  I've loved all of the people who've come through my life, even though there are some I've loved a lot less. LOL   I had a friend call and offer to drive down from VA  to FL to sit with me while Larry had neurosurgery.

Friendship is one of the treasured gifts life can give us.   Often being a friend means just show up and be there for them.

Sep 03, 2026 07:13 PM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Oh, that is so sweet, Kathy Streib! I did the same thing with Pam (my gf in Lake Havasu) when she had knee surgery. Her hubby told me to wait for his call. Of course, she was a champ and her hubby said to wait for something more severe but, she's like a sister and I didn't want her hubby to be alone and I wanted her to know I was there for her.

Friendship is indeed, one of the most treasured gifts we are given in this life. Oftentimes, just knowing someone is there for us means all the world to us too.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - what a lovely blog post! Friendship is such a priceless gift we give to each other. It comes and goes but lifetime friendship is to be cherished. I adored your personal story about the 15 people who came into your life all because of social connections on ActiveRain. When they showed up, going the distance, on your doorstep in Charlotte to help you celebrate your new home had to be one of the highlights of your life.

To have a 50+ year friendship is worth celebrating! Her presence has to be one of the best gifts you ever received. The number of miles and places you go, will never separate the love of friendship from those that mean the world to you.

Truly, I was touched by this very inspiring blog post on friendship.

Thank you so much, Patricia Feager! Friendship truly is a precious gift and I am thankful for them all. The visit from the AR peeps was planned but, we didn't know it was going to take as long as it did to finish building our house! Friends don't care about things like that and I was so thankful everyone was good with it! Missy Caulk actually spent a couple of nights with us after everyone else had left after 2 nights (our planned time together).

As for the BFF from HS--what a special place she holds in my heart. I am truly blessed.

Debe, love the blog. Like a lot of us reading this we can relate to the changing nature of friendships. I'll have to admit AR has been one of the most valuable avenues I found in my real estate life. I've sent referrals and I've received them as well. I like that I can go to my AR friends to help a client along the way. I've never worried that things would work out because they always do. And of course, I've dropped in on AR friends in my travels, and I have had wonderful AR friends drop in on me as well. It's always fun and enjoyable.
