What ParentingšŸ¼Taught Me About Real EstatešŸ”

AI Won’t Replace Great REALTORSĀ®
for the Same Reason It Won’t Replace Great Parents

AI will not replace all real estate agents. It will replace real estate agents who refuse to adopt it. I watched personal computers transform real estate in the 1990s, and frankly, they flummoxed plenty of the old guard. And that is not an age comment. It’s a mindset comment. Some (including my own mother) couldn't handle the MLS being online vs. a book you had to wait for delivery of each week. That's be like arguing for a phone book over a Google search. It was the end of many careers as a result.

Having years under your belt in real estate is an enormous advantage if you continue to grow, learn, and evolve. Experience becomes a liability only when someone spends 25 years simply repeating Year One.

I have been coached and train every year since 1999. I have never wanted to be exactly the same agent this year that I was last year. And next year, I intend to be better than I am today. That’s a commitment I made to myself and, more importantly, to my clients.

The Core Principles Haven’t Changed...
In Parenting or Real Estate

The fundamental principles of real estate are remarkably durable.

What changes is the technology. The generations we serve. The way people communicate. How they consume information. Where they search. How quickly they expect answers. And increasingly, how they use technology and AI to help make home buying decisions.

I look at real estate a lot like parenting.

As a Dad and an Uncle, I’ve watched the habits of kids change, playing inside more than outside. I see the toys change. The TV shows change. The gadgets definitely change. Sometimes they’re even old ideas repackaged and sold back to us as something revolutionary.

Even education looks very different today than it did when I was a kid.

But the principles of good parenting haven’t changed.

You still have to care for your kids. Teach them. Guide them. Set boundaries. Build trust. Help them think. And prepare them to become capable, functioning adults who can make good decisions for themselves.

Real estate is much the same.

The tools evolve. The platforms change.

Consumer behavior shifts. Markets remain rollercoaster rides; ever changing.

But trust, competence, character, communication, advocacy, relationships, and doing the right thing for the client remain timeless.

The mistake isn’t respecting the old principles.

The mistake is continuing to use old methods simply because they once worked.

Our value remains in the wisdom earned through years of experience. In an AI world, consumers may be drowning in information, but they will still be starving for wisdom...our wisdom!

There's No APP For What We Do!

So Here’s a Question for Consumers

When you’re interviewing a real estate agent, ask them about AI.

You don’t need a technical explanation. You’re really listening for their attitude toward change.

Ask:

ā€œHow are you using AI or newer technology in your business?ā€

Then ask:

ā€œWhat was the last real estate class, training program, or coaching session you completed?ā€

And maybe the most revealing question:

ā€œWhen was it?ā€

Years of experience matter. But years of experience combined with continuous education, curiosity, and adaptation matter a whole lot more.

I like knowing my surgeon is familiar with the latest techniques before picking up the scalpel, wouldn’t you?

REALTORSĀ® may not be saving lives.

But we are absolutely helping people make decisions that can change them.

Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR Ā® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP terrific analogy, Thomas. I feel the people who'll be replaced by AI are those who worry too much about it instead of figuring out how to make it work for them.

Agreed, Nina. As I mentioned in my post, I watched my mom, who was a brilliant REALTOR®, gradually fade out of the business between 1999 and 2001 because she resisted adopting laptops, internet and technology as standard tools of the profession.

Meanwhile, I can’t imagine practicing real estate without them today, even though I grew up in a phone book, Rolodex, and paper-file real estate family.

The principles of real estate didn’t change. The tools did. And refusing to adapt to the tools can eventually make even a great professional less competitive.

Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP I plan to fade out soon, but not because I don't adopt the new tools... it's all about slowing down my life.

Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR Ā® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP a HUGE mistake I see many young parents make is that they are more worried about being their children friend than they are about being their parent.Ā  They don't seem to realize they are first and foremost their parent, and secondary maybe their friend.Ā  Their responsibility is to fulfill the responsibilities you mentioned in this blog.Ā  It is the same in this business.Ā  Everyone involved in a transaction need to first do their job and fulfil the duties of that job.Ā

Agreed George Souto - I was never my sons friend until he could legally drink. We were always parent/child. Now that he's in his twenties we found a friendship, but I'm always Dad first...just with less authority šŸ˜‚

Thomas, the distinction between experience and repeated habit is the part that stands out to me. Twenty-five years in the business only has value if you are still learning in year twenty-five. AI will keep changing the tools, but judgment, trust, advocacy, and the willingness to adapt are still what separate a professional from a commodity. Have a great day!

Hi Thomas- great post. I can remember one of my clients had not chosen their agent yet. When I asked if he'd like some suggestions from me, he said whoever they were, he wanted them to know how to text and have a smartphone. This was in 2008.Ā

The basic principles stay the same but you have to be willing to use "today's" tools and you have to know your audience.Ā

Excellent analogy and love the picture with the agent's heel on AI's crushed body! Being open to new technology, continuing to learn, and continuing to provide guidance for our children and our clients - these are extremely important actions to take.

Good morning Thomas,

So glad to see this post featured! What a wonderful analogy.Ā The principles of real estate didn’t change. The tools did. And refusing to adapt to the tools can eventually make even a great professional less competitive, just like what happened to your mom. Well done!

Thank You Dorie Dillard Austin TX - yes indeed. My mom taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my first year in real estate, although unintentionally: I watched what happened when she chose not to adapt.

It showed me early on how important it is to keep learning, roll with the changes, and adapt and overcome. The principles of real estate may stay the same, but the way we practice the business never stops evolving. šŸ’”

In an AI world, consumers are drowning in information but starving for wisdom.' What a powerful line, Thomas! 🧠✨ Your comparison to a surgeon needing to know the latest techniques is spot on. Years of experience mean nothing if an agent is just repeating year one over and over. Thank you for this reminder to stay curious and always keep learning!

The analogy of real estate to family is so apropos, both reflect commitment to relationship. And that comparison adds a sense of warmth to a discussion of inanimate tech. But the agent that well adopts current technology will expand and grow their business relationships into a sphere of influence.

Good morning Thomas. If you keep using what worked way back when and don't embrace new concepts, ideas and technology, soon you will be part of history. If you embrace new concepts you can be part of tomorrow. Choose wisely. Enjoy your day.

Thomas J. Nelson, the comparison to parenting makes the point perfectly: the tools and technology may change, but trust, judgment, guidance, and genuine human relationships remain at the heart of what great REALTORSĀ® do. AI is most powerful when we use it to strengthen those qualities and serve our clients better, not when we expect it to replace the experience and wisdom they depend on.
