My Story: Moving from the Tropics to Coastal Fog
I grew up in the Dominican Republic, where the summer heat was always intense. I wished for a way to cool off, and the only real break came from rain or a big storm.
When I first moved to Pacifica from the Dominican Republic, I landed at SFO expecting sunny California weather. Fog rolled in so thick on the drive home that I could not see past the hood of the car. I did not know where I was until the sun came up the next morning and revealed a beautiful town nestled between green hills, valleys, and the Pacific Ocean.
Getting used to the cold took time. Today, I genuinely enjoy living with nature's free air conditioning every day.
Living with Coastal Fog
When cities further down the Peninsula reach 90 degrees, Pacifica stays cool. A heavy blanket of ocean fog covers our hills throughout the summer months, formed when warm inland air meets the cold Pacific and builds the marine layer that blankets the Northern California coast.
Visitors often step out of their cars in shorts and t-shirts, then run straight into a local coffee shop for a warm sweater. Locals love this weather:

Fun Local Spots to Enjoy a Foggy Pacifica Summer
The cool weather never keeps us inside. Pacifica has wonderful places to visit even under the fog:
✓ Linda Mar Beach (Pacifica State Beach): Famous for surfing and its beachfront Taco Bell Cantina, where surfers enjoy tacos and cold drinks on the patio while watching the waves.
✓ Sam's Castle and Local History: Built in 1908, Sam's Castle sits on the cliffs with sweeping ocean views. The Pacifica Historical Society offers tours here and at the Little Brown Church museum.
✓ Chit Chat Cafe: This cozy neighborhood spot on West Manor Drive is a local favorite for hot coffee, fresh bagels, and live acoustic music with ocean views.
✓ Rockaway Beach and Sharp Park: Great spots for shopping, tide pools, or a walk along the dark sand near the pier.
✓ Nick's Restaurant: A Rockaway Beach institution since 1927, this oceanfront landmark is famous for its grilled crab sandwich, cocktail lounge, and front-row views of the waves.

✓ Scenic Hiking Trails: Hikers love the cool air at Mori Point, the paved cliffside path at Devil's Slide Trail, and the quiet trees at San Pedro Valley Park, plus many more trails throughout town.
Our Community and Pacifica's "Secret" Summer
Summer brings our community together. Neighbors meet every Wednesday at the Pacifica Farmers Market, and local groups are already preparing for the 39th Annual Pacific Coast Fog Fest on Palmetto Avenue, September 26 and 27.
Home buyers often ask me if the sun ever shines here. I always share our secret: real summer arrives in September and October. The fog finally clears then, leaving warm days and bright blue skies behind.
Until that stretch arrives, summer in my town means warm layers, beautiful sunsets, ocean fog, and a wonderful coastal lifestyle.
