I'm going to try to be brief BUT if this is going to be your first winter in North Dakota as a home owner you need to start getting prepared NOW!
The photo above was taken on 08/29/2029. I can assure you that soon it will be unrecognizable. Everything green will be gone! All foliage will be brown, laying on the ground, shriveled up under a blanket of snow.
Such a radical change in nature means you need to make radical preparations to protect your home from what could be sever damage due to freezing.
Water is always the enemy of a home. Snow is water. Ice is water.

I can see this post could go very long so I will deliberately shorten it HOWEVER I can not gloss over the great damage freezing, thawing, and freezing again does to a home.
Areas of concern include a homes roof, plumbing and foundation. Also of concern are items you may have left outside in a warmer climate.
Do you have a garden hose connected to your home? Remove it and drain it or your hose will be destroyed and there is a good chance that the water faucet will also be damaged.
Do you have an above ground pool? Drain it and dismantle it (covering it won't work). If you do not it will be very icky in the spring and you will not want to ever use it again.
Does your home have rain gutters? They need to be cleaned out before winter or they will trap melted snow and create an "Ice Dam" that will back up under your shingles. That doesn't sound scary but it is very scary, damaging not only to your roof but also to your homes interior. That ice melts into your home ruining your sheetrock and often attic insulation.
Hopefully this short list is enough to prompt you to lookup winter preparation in a cold environment. A home owner faces enough expense without added expense due to lack of preparation.
