She Came With the House
John Palmer asked an interesting question in the Q&A a few days ago…What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen left behind in a house? Some answers baffle the mind. I hope you’ll head to John’s question and share what you have!
While I never saw anything left behind while consulting on a home, a house that came with something I never would have expected came to mind.
Years ago, Larry and I were thinking of moving to Orlando and wanted something on a lake. We drove up a winding road, with a small house tucked along the side. I asked the agent the name of the street we were on.
“Oh, this isn’t a street…this is the driveway to the house we’re looking at!”
The house wasn’t a mansion by any means, but a large ranch house on a 
lake.
Outside the master bedroom door was the leg of a mannequin with net hose and heels. Above the huge circular bed was a mirror. Next to the master was a large sunken hot tub, at least 10 or 12 feet in diameter. Two rows of stadium seating were around the hot tub.
It turns out the owner also owned several Gentlemen’s Clubs throughout the area. However, that’s not what made this the strangest thing that might have been left with the house.
The seller came in as we were leaving. Very nice and cordial. Then they asked me this…
If you decide to buy the house, will you keep Sister Mary?
What???
The owner went to Catholic schools in the East and was close to one of the nuns. When she retired, he offered her the house on his property, rent-free! She’d been living ever since, and he did not want to uproot her.
As it turns out, we passed on the house, not because of the nun but for other reasons.
Would we have allowed her to stay on the property? Who knows!?
