Ask An Ambassador: Rainer or Rainmaker?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

If you're new to ActiveRain and writing some great posts to the public but not getting results, there may be a simple explanation, and it's not "blogging is dead or an obsolete form of marketing".

It could be as simple as the category of your ActiveRain membership.

There are two levels of ActiveRain membership:

1.  Rainer

2.  Rainmaker

The biggest difference between the two levels?

A Rainer account is MEMBERS ONLY, and we're not talking about a jacket that shows up in the Sopranos final scene.  MEMBERS ONLY means all your activity in the Rain is NOT indexed by any of the search bots.  Google, Bing, etc., do not know your posts and questions exist.  You can write the best ever public facing evergree posts about your local housing market, new construction trends, subdivisions, your latest listing, sold info, etc, and the ONLY people that will ever see those posts are other members of ActiveRain.  While it MIGHT potentially lead to a referral from another agent, no home buyer or seller in your market will EVER see those posts unless they join ActiveRain, and that's a long shot.  This is a case of "you get what you pay for".  Since a Rainer account is free, you don't get publicized to the world UNTIL you reach 500,000 points and qualify for a free Rainmaker account (once Support changes your status).

On the other hand, a Rainmaker account is fully visible to the world UNLESS you intentionally select a MEMBERS ONLY status for your post or question.  Every Public post is indexed, doesn't matter time of day or day or week, the bots are going to see you.  Now whether you get results is going to totally depend on the quality of your post and how much competition you have for the topic.

You can gain Rainmaker by paying for it (go to My Home and look for UPGRADE ACCOUNT on the left sidebar).

Or you may have been grandfathered if you've been here since the early days of ActiveRain.

Or as mentioned earlier, once you've reached 500,000 points, you're entitled to a free Rainmaker account.  It will take some time to reach that level, and in my opinion, if you want to be found by the public, paying for a membership may be one of the best returns on your dollar out there once you understand how to turn your blogging into a productive tool.

In any case, even if you opt to remain a Rainer, there's a ton of great peer to peer information in ActiveRain that offers you the opportunity to build a network while you learn the tools of the trade.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Wayne, over the years, almost every time I've heard of a new tool to help our business, it's been rooted in this community.

Yes, excellent explanation of why it may make sense for a Rainer to switch to a Rainmaker account. Have a wonderful week!

Liz and Bill break down an important distinction here for anyone navigating ActiveRain membership tiers. The visibility difference between a Rainer account keeping things members-only and a Rainmaker account putting posts out into the wider search engine ecosystem is a crucial piece of the puzzle for online lead generation and local SEO.

Thanks for sharing such a clear and practical breakdown of how the platform works, Liz and Bill Spear!

Gwen, I've seen so many great posts that would have helped the public, if only they hadn't been Members Only!

It can be a very binary environment :)

This is a tough one. I think it has value to be a rainmaker, but with fewer new agents seeing the value in AR, maybe having graduated levels would be better.

I think it all comes down to one's purpose here.  To reach the public, go paid.  To learn, develop relationships, test ideas with other agents, then Rainer is more than adequate.

Good morning Bill,

Great explanation of the difference of the 2 categories to be members in Active Rain. Good to point out the distinction.

I suspect many new members don't gather there's a difference until they've been here a bit.

Hi Bill,
There are people who can benefit from maintaining a Rainer account if all they are interested in is networking with other members. That alone is an extremely valuable benefit. However, as you said, anyone who wants to reach the general public needs that Rainmaker account.

Sep 01, 2026 06:50 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Exactly.  If your purpose is more social/learning, Rainer is more than sufficient.

We paid, but got our Rainmaker account for free earlier because of a trivia contest ActiveRain held!

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - new as well as some not-so-fresh members to this forum face (or have faced this question.   Like Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty commented AR and other factors continue to evolve.  Why is a member here?  What is the level of commitment.  Where else can a member be found?

Sep 01, 2026 07:54 AM

Exactly, the why may dictate the how, and that can be very different from one individual to another.

Bill in my opinion the purpose of blogging is to cast a wide a net as possible, so it does not make any sense to me to not be a Rainmaker and limit your outreach.

Technically, my last few years of posts have been strictly to this community.  But I've got bushels of old posts that I am very glad to know are still being found by the public and still leading to calls.

Well that is convenient timing for my reading of this post. I actually just hit 500,000 points last week. My focus for this site was always agent to agent relationships and learning, but if I now qualify for the public to see my posts - even better, even though that wasn't my objective.

Sep 01, 2026 10:54 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Adam Feinberg , congrats on the milestone!  I think it's a manual change process, so you may have to email support@ActiveRain.com to get the status switched.  I don't know if your old posts automatically go from Members Only to Public, or if you'll have to manually edit the status on a post by post basic for any you want to go full public.

Hello Bill Liz and Bill Spear - paying for a Rainmaker account has got to be among the top things real estate agents pay for and truly get the bang for their buck - if they use it!

The ROI (and we've not paid much to ActiveRain) has been tremendous.  Way better than many other things we've tried over the years without any (or almost any) return on our investment.

Bill, when you explain things here on ActiveRain, you leave no stone unturned. It's good you post vital information for all on AR. The more you know, the more you grow your business, thanks to members like you. And the friendship received as a result of networking is the best gift anyone can hope to receive.

Patricia Feager , the willingness of the members of this community to share day after day, year after year is amazing.  Locally in our offices, it often felt like everything was a trade secret, here, everything is wide open!
