The Role of Snow Load & Roof Pitch in Mountain Architecture

How Roof Design Protects Mountain Cabins

When viewing homes in Big Bear, Fawnskin, or Sugarloaf, roof design serves a functional purpose beyond aesthetic appeal.

Roof Styles & Winter Performance

  • Steep Pitch / A-Frame Roofs:

Shed snow accumulation rapidly, preventing heavy snow weight buildup on structural rafters.

  • Gable Roofs with Metal Valleys:

Direct melting snow away from entry doors and walkways, reducing ice hazard areas.

  • Low-Slope Roofs with Snow Guard Rails:

Keep snow loads controlled so large sheets do not slide off unexpectedly onto decks or driveways.

This makes me look at those steep cabin roofs a little differently. There’s a lot of function behind that classic mountain-home look!

Dennis, the new home we're building is a Quonset Hut, so metal roof and sides that curve on the top and flatten on the sides.  Some snow sticks in the valleys of the arches, and while we're not moved in yet, we've been told that when the snow releases from the roof, it can be pretty loud!  Something we'll have to consider if we want rain collection gutters around the base of the foundation.
