Friday Fun…What Are You Reading?

This is a day I love celebrating!  Today is National Read a Book Day, so I hope you’ll celebrate by taking some time to read a book today or this weekend.

Whether you choose a physical book, an e-book, or an audiobook, you are stepping into a world that can take you far away or right into your own backyard.

-760-770 million tracked book sales in the U.S. each year

-Over 4 million new book titles each year

-The Bible is the #1 best-selling book of all time

Did you know that reading:

-increases your vocabulary

-improves your cognitive health

-increases your ability to focus

-relieves stress

And…besides that…it’s fun!!!

The next time you’re considering a gift for a young person, how about a book? (and yes…their toy or video game)

Several years ago, I celebrated National Read a Book Day by reading to a classroom of children in Delray Beach. And I certainly wasn’t alone.

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, grandparents, parents, and local business owners all joined in, sharing their time and their love of reading with the children.

Here’s the greeting the children in my classroom made for ActiveRain.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Roy Kelley, who keeps our reading lists full!!! If you’re looking for a book to read, check out his blog.

So…what are you reading???

Good morning, Kathy... for me, National Reading Day is every day. There's hardly ever a day when I'm not spending at least 15 minutes reading a book that has nothing to do with business.

Nina Hollander, Broker same here!  I'll read while brushing my teeth or on my nebulizer.

Kathy, I brought two books with me, and they are still in the closet.   I usually go for a walk, I did only to the store today.

Kathy Streib so true, I hear it will be raining in January.  Plenty of time for books then, or good movies.

Good morning Kathy. Roy Kelley got me the read fiction which I rapidly consumed and still do. My grandson likes to read and he likes to read sitting next to me in 20 minute sessions. Sometimes he likes to do two or three sessions bck to back. Any day is reading day if I get the time. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I love that your grandson likes to read. Did you know that reading out loud is also healthy for our brains?

Reading to children may be one of the few gifts that creates both an immediate experience and a lifelong capability. Your Delray Beach classroom example is the part that matters most: children saw adults from across the community treating reading as something worth showing up for. A book is valuable, but an adult who makes the book feel important can change the trajectory.

HI Ken Semler I love your comment!!!!   And, I agree. Seeing a policeman or fireman some into your classroom was always fun for me. But to see them take the time to read a book to you....what child wouldn't remember that!!! It's critical that we encourage our children to read and continue to learn as they do!!!

Kathy Streib always shines a light on the simple joys that keep us grounded, Kathy. National Read a Book Day is a wonderful reminder to slow down and lose ourselves in a good story. Seeing how communities come together to share the love of reading with children—like your wonderful example from Delray Beach—makes it clear what truly matters. Thanks for always keeping our reading lists full and our spirits bright!

I have never been much of a reader, but last year I started reading more often, and I am starting to enjoy it.  The book I am currently reading is The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis.

There is something about real books. Not readers, not phones...real books. When you start them young, their eyes light up with every new book.

Hi Kathy,
I always have a book or two going, depending on my mood. I love the Anne of Green Gables series, and I just downloaded it for some entertaining reading.

Carol Williams I never knew Anne of Green Gables was set on Prince Edward Island - it is beautiful!

Carol Williams When Harry Potter came out, I read the first book just to see what all of the talk was about. And...I enjoyed the series. Our friend's daughter was reading it as well so we'd sit and read our books together. Some people scoff at the idea of a Harry Potter book. I just ask if they've ever read it.

I just finished a book part historical fiction called The Boy who led them, about a young smuggler who lived in the 18th century in Kent, England. It starts with a modern day young boy finding an old glass bottle washed ashore which speaks of a treasure. AS Fun read.

Hi Kathy! Oh I positively LOVE to read and usually have the book at my bedside and download the audible copy so I can listen when I'm driving too! LOL I am reading The Housemaid by Freida McFadden and just finished The Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown. I typically mail my youngest the books when I'm finished. We enjoy the same type of books.

One of our favorite series, we read to help us better understand his brother's little boy, Liam (who is autistic). That series was fabulous and I recommend it to everyone! The Rosie Project, The Rosie Effect and The Rosie Result--all fantastic and quick-reads by Graeme Simsion.

Love the video in DelRay! 😍

Forgot to mention, I don't think I'll ever catch up with all of Roy's books!! He's quite the reader!

I am into memoirs at the moment. I don't get much reading time as my head is often buried in the financial markets I trade. To a degree that is also reading just in bites rather than books.
