Monday Lessons with Dorie ~ Coming Home to Yourself

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Apex Realtors, LLC ~ 512.750.6899 410939

“At the end of the day, it isn't where I came from. Maybe home is somewhere I'm going and I've never been before.” ....... Warsan Shire

Labor Day seems like the perfect time to think about where we’re going, not just where we’ve been.

We spend so much of our lives working toward something. A career. A family. A dream. A new chapter. We work hard, overcome challenges, celebrate milestones and sometimes wonder when we’ll finally arrive at that place where everything feels just right.

But maybe home isn’t a place we eventually reach.

Maybe home is a feeling.

It’s that feeling of belonging. Of being comfortable in your own skin. Of knowing you are enough exactly as you are and that you don't have to constantly prove your worth.

And maybe some of the most important work we do isn't the work that comes with a paycheck or a title.

It’s the work of raising a family. Showing up for a friend. Caring for someone who needs us. Starting over. Learning something new. Getting back up after disappointment. Encouraging someone else when we could use encouragement ourselves.

Much of that work is invisible. And yet, it matters.

So this Labor Day, I hope we take a moment to recognize all the work we've done, and all the work we are still doing.

Don't wait for the big accomplishment to celebrate yourself.

Celebrate the small wins.

The phone call you finally made.
The difficult conversation you handled.
The goal you didn't give up on.
The person you helped.
The challenge you made it through.
The day you simply kept going.

Those aren't small things. They are the building blocks of a life.

And perhaps the greatest lesson is this: We don't have to wait for some future version of ourselves to feel at home.

We can choose to feel at home right here, right now.

This Labor Day, I’m grateful for the work behind me, excited about the possibilities ahead of me, and determined to keep working hard, having fun and being fully myself along the way.

Because maybe coming home isn't about returning to where we've been.

Maybe it's about becoming who we're meant to be.

So, here's my Monday Lesson for you:

What are you working toward today that might just become your next definition of “home”?

Until next Monday...

Keep learning, keep growing, and Be the Difference.

Good morning, Dorie... I am working towards slowing down so that I can enjoy my next stage of life as a retired person. I've retired twice already in my life and now it's time to make it stick.

Good morning Nina Hollander, Broker,

I had forgotten you are right you have retired 2 other times. The beauty of real estate is you can slow down and still be selling just at a different level. Happy Labor Day!

Dorie, this is such a grounding and beautiful reminder for a holiday. We get so caught up chasing the next milestone or project that we forget the invisible work—and the inner work—is what truly builds a life.

Taking a moment to pause, celebrate the small wins, and feel at home right where we are is so important. Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful perspective to start the week!

Hi Dorie- beautiful post. When we were living in FL, even though I loved it there, I could feel I was HOME as soon as we crossed over the Texas state line. It's a feeling that never left me.

Hi Dorie,

At this stage of my life, I don't feel as though I'm working toward any particular destination anymore. For many years there was always another goal, another responsibility or another milestone somewhere ahead.

Today, what I'm “working toward” is simpler: staying active, staying healthy and enjoying the life I have right now. With a new relationship bringing an unexpected new chapter into my life, I'm discovering that there can still be plenty of surprises ahead even when you aren't actively searching for the next destination.

Maybe that's another definition of home. It isn't always something we're striving to reach. Sometimes it's simply being content with where we are, appreciating who we're sharing the journey with, and remaining open to wherever life takes us next.

Dorie, this is such a beautiful reminder that some of the most meaningful work we do is the work no one sees or applauds. Raising families, caring for others, rebuilding after disappointment and simply continuing to show up, all shape who we become. I love your thought that “home” may not be somewhere we return to, but something we discover as we grow more comfortable with who we are.

Perhaps becoming who we’re meant to be is the most important work of all. Like, George Souto, I'm very happy being who I am!

Beautifully written, my friend!
