Shut Out the Noise

By
Real Estate Agent with JLA Realty - Omnia Elevate

I watched a football game Saturday night and spent Sunday morning uncomfortable about my own week. Here's why.

If you follow college football at all, you know how much noise had piled up around LSU going into Saturday.

New head coach, first game. A controversy over whether two former Ole Miss players were eligible to come back to college football after signing with NFL teams. Lawsuits. Questions aimed at the SEC and the NCAA. Opinions coming from every direction.

Then, on top of all of it, the game got delayed by weather.

When they finally kicked off, LSU beat Clemson 51–10.

Not won. Dominated. 644 total yards to 145. Thirty-seven first downs to eight. Eleven of sixteen on third down while Clemson converted one of thirteen. It was 31–3 at halftime and Clemson didn't find the end zone until late in the fourth quarter.

Shut Out the Noise, a Sunday Thought on real estate agent focus and discipline from Jeremy Williams of JLA Realty Omnia Elevate.

Here's the Part That Got Me

None of that noise went away. The lawsuits didn't resolve themselves at kickoff. The headlines didn't stop. The storm didn't apologize.

They just stopped giving it their attention for three hours.

And I sat there thinking about my own week. About how many hours I'd given to things that produced exactly nothing.

Not lost to emergencies. Lost to noise I chose to let in.

The Noise Doesn't Announce Itself

That's the trap. If distraction showed up wearing a name tag, we'd all handle it.

Instead it arrives disguised as work.

Reading one more market analysis feels productive. Refreshing the rate news feels responsible. Watching what the top producer in your market is posting feels like research. Rewriting your bio for the fourth time feels like marketing. Sitting with one problem transaction for six hours feels like client service, when forty-five minutes and a phone call would have handled it.

None of that is work. Work is a conversation with a human being who might buy or sell a home.

Everything else is preparation for work, or it's avoidance of work wearing preparation's clothes. And most of us are far better at telling the difference in someone else's business than in our own.

What I Keep Coming Back To

There will always be noise. That isn't a market condition, it's the job.

The question was never whether we could eliminate it. It's whether we can build enough discipline to stop letting it decide where our attention goes.

And here's the thing about that discipline: it compounds quietly. A focused hour becomes a productive morning. Productive mornings become productive weeks. Enough productive weeks and you're not slightly ahead of where you would have been. You're in a different business.

Which also means the reverse compounds. That's the part I don't love thinking about.

Four Things I'm Doing This Week

Conviction is easy on a Sunday. Surviving Tuesday is the actual test. So, specifically:

Prospecting goes on the calendar as an appointment. Not a reminder, not a task. A block with a start and an end that I defend the way I'd defend a listing presentation I already confirmed.

Database before inbox. My inbox is a list of other people's priorities. My database is a list of people who already trust me. The first ninety minutes go to the second list.

Phone off the field during focus blocks. The market news will still be there at eleven, and it will not have changed because I checked it at nine.

One skill, trained on purpose. Not five. One — attended, then implemented that same week while it's still warm. Half of what we call a training problem is really an implementation problem.

Control What You Can Control

LSU couldn't control the controversy, the headlines, or the weather.

They could control what happened after kickoff.

So can we. Identify the noise that's been stealing your attention this week — name it specifically, not generally — and then shut it out.

Focus. Execute. Be disciplined.

A Question for the Rain

I'd rather hear from you than talk at you, so here's what I'm actually curious about:

What's the one distraction you already know is costing you the most — and what's kept you from cutting it?

I have my own answer and I'm not proud of it. Put yours in the comments. I read every one.

This started as a Sunday note to the agents in our organization and turned into something I thought was worth sharing more widely. The longer version is here, with a fuller breakdown of the disciplines and answers to the questions agents ask me most about staying focused.

If you're working on this yourself, our training calendar and free training resources are open, and for Texas agents, knowing your contracts cold removes an entire category of noise from the week.

And if you're an experienced agent who's started quietly wondering whether your current environment still fits where you're trying to take your business — no pitch, no expectation — that's a conversation I'm always glad to have. You can reach me here, or read why experienced agents have been making the move.
