You don’t have to drive halfway across Florida to find someplace interesting. Dade City is a good example. From Magnolia Plaza here in The Villages, it’s about 35 miles and roughly a 45-minute drive.
I’d start at Pioneer Florida Museum & Village. The 21-acre grounds include more than a dozen historic buildings and exhibits, including the Trilby train depot, a one-room schoolhouse, an 1860s home, church, general store and old citrus packing house.
Then I’m heading downtown for lunch at Kafe Kokopelli. This place caught my attention before I even looked at the menu. The restaurant is inside a building Ford Motor Company built in 1916 for Model-T sales and service. The old showroom was in front and the service bays were in back, where the restaurant entrance is today.
After lunch, I’d spend some time walking around downtown. Dade City still has that small-town Florida feel, with historic buildings, antique stores and locally owned shops. Museum, an unusual place for lunch, a little exploring and still back in The Villages in plenty of time for happy hour. That sounds like a pretty good Friday to me.
