Lockhouse 8 - C&O Canal Trust

Dedicated on August 27, Lockhouse 8 is the newest addition to the C&O Canal Trust’s Canal Quarters program. Located in the “Seven Locks” area near Cabin John, this historic home witnessed nearly 200 years of canal, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., history. Nine lockkeepers and their families once lived here while tending this busy stretch of the canal near Georgetown.

The rehabilitated lockhouse now offers an immersive stay inspired by the rustic 1960s era, when the C&O Canal was recognized as a national monument and the home briefly served as park ranger housing. Lockhouse 8 is open for overnight reservations through Canal Quarters, managed by the C&O Canal Trust in partnership with the National Park Service.

Good afternoon Toy,

How interesting is this! I like the the newest addition to the C&O Canal Trust’s Canal Quarters program that was dedicated on August 27th. Lockhouse 8 appears to be an appropriate name.

Restoring Lockhouse 8 as an overnight experience gives visitors a much stronger connection to the canal's working history, Roy. The nine lockkeepers and their families make the building more than a preserved structure, and the 1960s ranger-house interpretation adds another layer to its nearly 200-year story. The Canal Quarters program is a thoughtful form of adaptive reuse.
