Once upon a time we used to go to a lot of movies. Drive-ins as a kid long before you pulled in and tuned your radio to get the sound track. The local theater (just two screens) with a limited selection, or a 60 mile drive to the nearest mall with the multi-plex!
Flash forward and now most local theaters feature reserved recliner seating, and some even have dine at your seat. A large soda and large popcorn to share almost requires a credit check. Fancy seats, fancy sound systems, and a LONG lead-in of commercials (is this movie EVER going to actually start??) have become a normal part of the experience, Realistically, if we decide to attend a movie, we know it's probably a minimum $50 expense.
The $50 question?
Is it worth it?
When you know that movie you want to see today will be on some streaming service in just a few months, is the value there? In most cases, the answer is NO.
In real estate, we're continually being asked to open our wallets, with the come on "one closing will pay for it!".
Sometimes the question is a $10 question. Or $50. Or $100. Or thousands. Or even 10s of thousands.
Short term expenses, monthly repeating, or annuals. Mo' money.
Some things have been no brainers for us, with the ROI being fantastic.
A Rainmaker account on ActiveRain has paid for itself many, many, many times over.
Our Wordpress site with IDX pages? With the work we've put in, another great ROI.
On the other hand, some expenses that might have made sense earlier in our careers became less of a return as the way consumers sought out information changed. As available knowledge became more important to area home buyers and sellers than the colors on our yard sign, we shifted to a significantly less expensive brokerage.
It's a question we all have to keep asking each other, is the value there?
Assess. Decide. Remove or sustain.
Have you found what gives you a great ROI for your dollars and effort?
