🔐 Will Our Children Know What a House Key Is?
Yesterday I wrote a little love letter to the house key — that tiny object we receive at closing that somehow represents something enormous.
Then Nina pointed out something I hadn’t considered:
What about keyless locks?
Good point, Nina. 😂 So I looked into where home locks are actually heading.
🔑 What might the future front door look like?
1. Your phone or watch becomes your key.
Instead of reaching for a key, we’ll increasingly unlock our homes with digital credentials stored on our phones and smartwatches.
2. Your home may simply recognize you.
Walk up to the door and it unlocks automatically — without taking anything out of your pocket.
3. Biometrics will become more common.
Fingerprints are already here. Facial recognition and other biometric options are likely to become increasingly normal in residential locks.
4. We’ll be able to “lend” a key without actually giving anyone a key.
A contractor gets access for three hours. A housekeeper every Tuesday. A guest for the weekend. Then the permission simply expires.
5. The old-fashioned metal key probably isn’t disappearing quite yet.
Batteries die. Phones get lost. Technology occasionally decides not to cooperate exactly when we need it. 😂 A physical backup still makes a lot of sense.
So Nina’s comment left me wondering:
Will the little house key eventually become something our children recognize mostly as a symbol of “home”?
I hope not entirely.
After all…
“One little access code unlocks the dreams” just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. 😂🔑❤️
