Wordless Wednesday…Humming Along

Keep your eyes open for friendly fliers passing through the Houston area on their way south. Or as my husband says…that’s a lot of bird s___!

Our favorite visitors are hummingbirds, and in particular the ruby-throated hummingbird.

You can attract hummingbirds to your yard with colorful flowers, nectar, water, and insects. You can make homemade nectar with 1 part (1 cup) plain white sugar to 4 parts (4 cups) water.

Why are the feeders so important?

They have an amazing metabolism and must refuel every 10-15 minutes.

Hummingbirds consume 50-100% or more of their body weight daily.

Take a look at the bird migration through Harris County, TX last night. More than 2,000,000 visitors passed through between 7:40 PM and 7:00 AM.

Want to see who’s passing through your area?

Good morning, Kathy. Those are amazing statistics about hummingbirds that I never knew. Every year I think I should do something and then never actually do it.

Nina Hollander, Broker  We have about 3 hummingbird feeders out now. One day, my hope is to find a hummingbird nest.

We usually have a hummingbird or two that flits around our back patio in the summer - there's one that seems to say hello by hovering right outside my office window. We don't feed them so I'm not sure why they come here!

As for the bird migration website - how do they know? It says over 16 million birds flew over the state of Montana last night. WHAT? That's a lot!

Kat Palmiotti do you have flowers the hummingbirds would like???  I have no idea how they calculate the number of birds that pass through an area. Maybe ChatGPT knows!! LOL

Well, I just went down a little rabbit hole, and yes, there are flowers here that hummingbirds like - although I don't think there are any around the house; maybe down near the stream Kathy Streib

Good morning, Kathy! Those migration numbers are staggering—it is hard to wrap your head around millions of tiny travelers passing through overnight. I always enjoy seeing the ruby-throated visitors make their way through, though Wayne's point about the cleanup certainly gives a chuckle! Thanks for sharing such a fun and informative Wordless Wednesday post.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 I wish I knew how they calculate the numbers.  We have our Oriole feeder out but have yet to see one.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty they are amazing. One year, Larry stood out in the backyard with a small bowl feeder that fit in the palm of his hand. He stood still long enough and a hummingbird came to his hand to feed.
