As I am putting together a road trip for next month, every day I see another location I just HAVE TO SEE in Portugal. I could probably spend a month traveling around this beautiful country, and still may not see all of what there is to offer.
This area is too far north for next month's journey, but is definitely on the list for the next road trip in Portugal.
The area of Monsanto looks absolutely stunning! They built homes around the boulders on the hill! The stone houses are directly below boulders. Can you imagine if it moved?
Here are some more details about this town -
- Location: Perched on Monsanto Hill in the Beira Baixa region, roughly 25 km from the Spanish border and a three-hour drive from Lisbon or Porto.
- The Boulders: Massive rocks weighing up to 200 tonnes form the walls and roofs of traditional granite homes.
- "Most Portuguese Village": Won a national competition in 1938 earning the title "the most Portuguese village in Portugal," which kept its medieval layout protected as a living museum.
- Castle of Monsanto: Ruins of a 12th-century fortress built by the Knights Templar and King Sancho I sit at the summit, offering 360-degree panoramic views.
