Memories of JFK, 9/11, and a Real Estate Career

Journal Entry 9/11/2026

JFK - The JFK assassination gave Americans their first dose of reality. When it comes to vulnerability, no one is exempt. The dramatic scene broadcast on T.V. in front of ordinary citizens, the media, documentaries, and movies proved when it comes to tragedy, facts, and confusion, no one is immune. Life is fragile.

9/11 - The Planes! The Towers! The Smoke! The Fires! Life can change in a New York minute. Shared grief can heal a nation. Unity is strongest when people are not divided. The Media and politicians can amplify fear, confusion, and division. Trust is never guaranteed. Freedom and safety require vigilance and security must be balanced.

Real Estate Career - It is natural for people to want a sense of belonging and a place to call home for their own. Renters and people who can't pay their mortgage and bills learn stability is not permanent. Children grow up and eventually want a place of their own - others prefer to remain with their parents. Not being approved for a mortgage loan or having enough money to buy a home carries consequences and less choices. Owning a home is hard work. A real estate agent and a buyer or seller shares a mutual purpose.

What Makes a House a Home - Belonging: It is where you feel safe and accepted. A home is where you share beautiful memories with those you trust. The things you put into your home represent your identity. A home increases in value when you maintain it and care for the things you have.

What Makes a Country a Country - Shared values that bring about peace, safety, and stability are desirable. Collective memories hold us together or tear us apart. Turning points in history teaches valuable lessons.

Life Lessons - We are bound together by building relationships and live through shared memories. Relationships revolve around struggles, challenges, opportunities, and possibilities. Grownups are not born. Babies are born. We think parents are supposed to protect their children, and our leaders are supposed to protect our country. We learn, there are no guarantees. Life represents fragility - both physical, mental, political, and social. Things don't always work out the way we think they should. Everyday there is a new awakening and something new to learn.

Good Morning Patricia Feager

Very well spoken. One of the most difficult lessons in life is to learn and accept that "there are no guarantees"

Patricia Feager good morning, Patricia... one of life's hardest lessons for most people to learn... that life is not fair and that there are no guarantees.

Nina Hollander, Broker - it's a lesson I learned long ago. Yet history repeats itself in different ways. The only thing that remains the same is the pain, suffering, and sorrow.

Life does not give anyone guarantees.

It's so true that there are no guarantees in life. 9-11 and JFK's assassination were both days where people experiencing them, said, "WHAT? How could that be?" because it was so unexpected and horrific. Staying vigilant is unfortunately still necessary.

Kat Palmiotti - We can never take a single day or person for granted. Our memories are the closest we get to having a soul. Staying vigilant is mandatory.

"WHAT?" - there comes a time in everyone's life when they become dumbfounded. That's what making history is all about.

Good morning Patricia. Well written. Thank you. Some things you can't forget. I remember exactly where I was at when the news about JFK spread and when I learned the news of 9-11.

Wayne Martin - In a few hours I will be at my Abbott Retiree Luncheon Reunion. I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about, especially since most of those people were with me on the day of 9/11. We were all in shock.

You're absolutely right: "There are some things you can never forget." As for the First Responders and our Veterans that were called to action, there's something that happens to each of them, whether that's on the battlefield or responding to a tragedy, unimaginable, yet they demonstrate true courage and the strength to do something superhuman, that others cannot do. We owe them all a debt of gratitude.

The whole 9/11 thing is quite something with regard to how they want us to believe that it went down, and it seems like the story they tell us is not the real story at all.

Good afternoon Patricia,

Those of us alive 25 years ago today will never forget the horrifying images of how savagely we were attacked by the terrosists.

Brian England - The American people were united. We were taught we must never forget. Today, I prayed for the souls and remembered them in my thoughts.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - our memories are flooded daily with examples of bad behavior and the consequences of horrible acts by humans to other people of all kinds. But 9/11 was so different; so horrible and unforgettable. One of my most vivid memories was watching the T.V. I saw people walking while they were covered in white ash and debris. I gasped when I saw Chicago's own Carol Marine, CBS News Broadcaster moving as fast as she could to cut through the smokey streets to get to safety. Carol was the Guest Speaker at my graduation from the College of Lake County, IL in 1992. I gasped when I saw that she was one of the victims that was on 60-minutues news, who survived and got through the streets of NY. The images. The people. The sounds. The shock of it all! And the news stories - all keep flooding back each year on 9/11.

Patricia the one positive thing that came out of 9/11 was that it unified our country that day and for a few days after.  It is a shame that unity did not continue, and today we are as divided as more than this country has ever been before.

George Souto - We were unified here in Texas and there was a lot of support. I welcomed the troops with asking others to join me at the DFW International Airport. We did that for two or three years, before I left KW for a different Broker.

Hi Patricia! What a powerful reflection on the events, relationships and shared memories that shape our lives. Great reminder that there are no guarantees—but every day brings a new awakening and another opportunity to learn, care for one another and strengthen the bonds that hold us together.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - your comment was also very powerful. It is my hope that by remembering 9/11, knowing life has no guarantees for anyone, that we, the people who survive and continue to live will learn and develop soul-shaping core values. On a daily basis, we must promise ourselves to uphold standards of excellence because they give shape to our character. Without our knowledge or recognition others will emulate.
