🐾 September 13 Is National Hug Your Hound Day
Message From Charlotte's Pet Friendly Realtor®: No Hound Should Be Left Unhugged!
"A hound will die for you, but never lie to you. And he'll look you straight in the face."
— George. R. R. Martin
If you share your home with a hound, today comes with a very simple assignment: hug your hound!
I share my home with a black and tan coon hound with a bit of beagle mix. So he's very excited about today and also looking forward to a few extra treats in honor of the day. I have a special affinity for hounds... before Bingo, I had my Gracie who was a Whippet (a breed in the Greyhound family).
National Hug Your Hound Day is observed every second Sunday in September and was created as a reminder to appreciate the special relationship we have with our dogs—and to think about life from their point of view, too.
"There ain't no harm in a hound, nohow."
— Mark Twain
And despite the name, you don’t actually need a Beagle, Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Coon Hound, Dachshund, Greyhound, or another member of the hound family to participate. On this particular day, “hound” can include all of our canine companions—purebred, mixed breed, big, small, young, old, energetic, or perfectly content to spend most of the day snoozing on the sofa.
Dogs have an uncanny ability to become part of the rhythm of a household. They know when it’s time for breakfast, when someone is due home, which cabinet holds the treats, and exactly how long they need to stare at you before you give in and share whatever you’re eating.
"Whoever loveth me, loveth my hound."
— Proverb
National Hug Your Hound Day is also a good reminder that a dog-friendly home is about more than a fenced yard. Safe places to play, comfortable places to rest, regular walks and exercise, and plenty of time with their humans all contribute to a happy dog.
So today, make a little extra time for your favorite four-legged family member. Take the longer walk. Toss the ball a few more times. Hand over an extra treat. Give them that belly rub they’ve been requesting.
And, of course, hug your hound!
Although if your particular hound isn’t a fan of hugs, I’m fairly certain an extra treat will be an acceptable substitute. 🐾 My Bingo loves both... hugs and treats!
