"Our mistakes won't irreparably damage our lives...

unless we let them."

~ Author, James E. Sweaney

Your action for today is to see if you are
hanging on toa mistake you made.
If you are, ask yourself
what it would take to forgive yourself?

I watched my son compete in Jujitsu this weekend.
He lost his first round of fights due to a mistake he made.
He came out of the ring, miffed at that mistake.
Then he let it go and went on to win his next fight,
having learned from that previous mistake.

Good morning Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP ,

A great quote and lesson to learn. Last night Arch Manning played terribly in the first half of the Longhorn game against Ohio. He came back after half time with a new mindset and lost his timidness and lead them to the biggest come back since 2007 and won the game 24-23!

Hi Thomas,
Romans 8:28 comes to mind: “In all things God works for the good of those who love Him.”  Whether you're religious or not, I believe this to be a universal truth.

As I wrote in my book, this doesn’t mean that everything that happens is good, or that it will automatically turn out the way we hope. It means our mistakes, disappointments, and hardships can ultimately be used for good if we are open to learning and growing from them. Your son demonstrated that beautifully. He acknowledged his mistake, learned from it, let it go, and carried the lesson, rather than the regret, into his next fight.

Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP congratulations to your son! I learned a long time ago that when things don't go my way for whatever reason, I give myself permission by be mad for 15 minutes and then to move on. You have the best pictures of Whiskey!

Ahh thank you! Yes, I agree with that "get over it policy", only being a male and less evolved😉, I need an hour to recover from my big mistakes or failures. Then they become lessons and the "failure" becomes a teachable moment.

HI Thomas and Whiskey- Congratulations to your son!   One of the best gifts we can give ourselves is forgiveness. When we fail or make a mistake, learn from it and move on!

Your son's response after the first jujitsu round makes the lesson tangible, Thomas. He acknowledged the mistake, released the frustration, and carried the learning into the next fight. In business, that same short recovery cycle is often more valuable than trying to avoid every mistake, because reflection only matters when it improves the next action.

It was so fun to see Wyatt in the tournament! I think I understand Jiu Jitsu a little better now!! Yes- Wyatt is very even tempered, and didn't let it bother him too much.  I'm so proud of him.  I love this quote: "I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."-Michael Jordan.     Failure is the best teacher.

Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP  this is something my son should learn, as yet he has not and compounds the same mistakes. I tell him he has not yet reached rock bottom with this, I think he might be there now. And he's an adult now, I hope he's there.

Corinne Guest one of the hardest things to do is allow our loved ones to hit "rock bottom". Our instinct, especially toward our kids, is to protect them. But, I have seen in my own family how trying to be a "cushion" for someone that needed that rock bottom experience, led to that person's untimely death (drugs). So, I for one believe in The University of Rock Bottom.

Yes guilty as charged, until now. My love endures but my bank account does not. It's time for him to work life out.

Watching your own kid lose a round to a mistake and then decide what to do with it is a harder lesson to sit through than to teach. The question about what it would take to forgive yourself is the useful part, because most people have never actually answered it. They assume the answer is time, and it usually is not. It is normally something specific and small that they have been avoiding.
