Ever heard the expression "always be prepared?" No one likes to think about the "what ifs" that life can throw at us. I would like to take a moment to share with you key items you should have in your home and in your car that just may help you in the event of an emergency.

Do you have a kit?

The American Red Cross encourages every family to have a "Kit" that contains 3 days of supplies in the event that you might be stranded. You should have a kit in your car and at home. Your kit needs the following:

  • 1 gallon of drinking water per person, per day.

  • Food - Non perishable, high in protein - no refrigeration, no cooking required.

  • Flashlight

  • Radio

  • Batteries and more batteries

  • Basic first aid essentials kit

  • Any needed prescriptions

  • Cash money

For your free checklist please visit:www.RedCross.org/BeRedCrossReady

Do you have a plan?

If you had to evacuate your home due to an emergency where would you meet up with your family and friends if you had no means by which to communicate with them? The American Red Cross encourages everyone to have a plan. The plan should include the following:

  • What to do in the event of an emergency

  • Where to go in the event of an emergency

  • Who to contact in case an emergency happens.

Have a written list of contact name and numbers and be sure everyone in your family has a copy of this list. Use this list to call and check in when you have the ability to communicate.

The American Red Cross is making it even easier to check in with your family. They have set up on their web site a safe and well list. Just log into www.redcross.org.

Talk with your family about disasters that can happen where you live. Talk with your family about why you need to prepare for these events. Calmly explain the potential dangers, and plan to share responsibilities and work together as a team. Make sure every family member knows their particular responsibilities. Designate an alternate in case a person is not there at the time.

Good post Mary,

Family's with small children should practice what to in case of an emergency. make a game of it. you would be surprised how much a 2 or 3 year old will pick up. when you make a game of it they are less likely to be afraid.

I have 8 children 7-24 and we have made sure they all know what to do in an emergency.

Shoot,  I live in Florida, it's Hurricane season....I got it covered, thank's for the reminder. There was a post a week or so ago about "what's in your trunk"  I don't know that that was the exact title...but it seem's that many of us RE agents...trunks are full of tool's and supplies..just to manage every day showings, etc.

Nice post and good reminder... We get the lecture from the state via the new's every May...but that's a good thing...especially for the new residence...

Thanks!  I grew up in California where we were always prepared for earthquakes.  In Denver, we forget about these types of lists.  I'll update my shopping list tomorrow!
