Welcome Wednesday: ActiveRain Information Center

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I enjoy sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

“A warm welcome opens the door. Shared knowledge gives us a reason to come in, stay, and grow together.”

Introducing A New Weekly Series: Welcome Wednesday

Every experienced ActiveRain member was once a new member, trying to understand how to navigate the platform and use it to strengthen our business. Few (if any) of us realized how much ActiveRain offered or that it was a two-way street. We learn from others AND share our own knowledge and experiences to help others.

Some of us were fortunate to have established members answer questions, leave encouraging comments, and show us that ActiveRain was much more than a place to publish blog posts. Those early connections often made the difference between simply joining and becoming an active part of the community.

That is the inspiration behind the Welcome Wednesday series.

Each Wednesday, I will combine two important parts of the ActiveRain experience: welcoming new members and sharing educational resources to help all of us use the platform more effectively.

Welcoming Our Newest First-Time Bloggers

For now, the series will focus on First-Time Bloggers because they appear most likely to be interested in learning about the platform and becoming active. The series may eventually be expanded to include other new members.

Each edition will introduce our newest First-Time Bloggers and include a link to their posts. I hope established members will visit, leave thoughtful comments, and personally welcome them to The Rain, and encourage them to become active.

New members may not yet understand the importance of commenting, participating, and building relationships. A little encouragement can help them feel noticed, supported, and motivated to continue.

Sharing ActiveRain Education

Each Wednesday's post will also feature at least one ActiveRain educational resource, such as:

* A helpful post written by an experienced member

* A video demonstrating an ActiveRain feature

* A reblog of an educational article

* A tip for writing, commenting, connecting, or building visibility

* An explanation of an overlooked feature

ActiveRain has accumulated an incredible library of knowledge over the years, but newer members may not know it exists or where to find it. Even longtime members occasionally discover a valuable feature, idea, or strategy they have never used.

I Will Need Your Help

Welcome Wednesday will be more than a list of names. The goal is to help new members form genuine connections while making ActiveRain education easier to find and understand.

If you have written or remember an educational post, video, or other resource that should be shared, please let me know.

You can also help by visiting featured members, reading their posts, leaving meaningful comments, answering questions, and inviting them to join the conversations that make ActiveRain special.

A new member may initially come here simply to publish a blog post. A genuine welcome may encourage that person to stay long enough to discover the relationships, knowledge, credibility, and referral opportunities available here.

Although First-Time Bloggers will be featured, this series is not only for them. Many of the resources may also interest seasoned members. We can all benefit from an occasional refresher, right?

Please watch for the first edition of Welcome Wednesday tomorrow, and help me give our featured members a warm welcome while sharing valuable ActiveRain knowledge along the way.

Do you remember who welcomed or helped you when you were new to ActiveRain? What encouraged you to become active? For me, it was the positive and constructive feedback I received on my blog posts.

If you have ideas for making this series even better, please let me know! Everything I do seems to evolve, so help me make this series the best it can be.

"What a wonderful initiative, Carol! We all remember what it was like to be a new member trying to navigate the platform, and having a dedicated space to welcome first-time bloggers is a fantastic idea. Combining those introductions with educational resources will definitely help them build connections and find their footing much faster. I look forward to reading the first edition tomorrow and will certainly do my part to help welcome our newest members to the community!"

I love it! I do remember how I got truly involved. After my first post, I received a call from an established member who explained to me about responding to comments. I'll always be grateful for that call!

Hi Kat Palmiotti
I know I did eventually receive a call, but my first encouragement was through comments on my posts.

Carol Williams good morning, Carol... what a great idea! I love it. Sadly, I do not remember anyone ever welcoming me to or helping me in Active Rain. That's why I lurked here for over a year before doing anything. The first person (and only person for a very long time) who reached out to me by phone was George Souto. But I must have been in the Rain almost two years before that happened. Thanks, George, by the way.

I eventually received a call from Margaret, but my first encouragement was the interaction within the comment section of the blog posts.

Good morning Carol. Sometimes on thing pokes you in the ribs to do another. It has been sometime since I recommended a post for your Second Chance Saturday series. And I will hopefully regularly stop by for this new series. Great idea. Enjoy your day.

Good Tuesday morning, Carol.

Thanks for telling us about this new series.

Is there a way to be sure that new members see your advice?

Hi Roy Kelley
I plan to send a personal email to each new member notifying them of the ActiveRain Information Center series and to watch for it each week. I also plan to start a new group (of the same name), where I can have all of those posts in one place.

Where do you find the time, Carol Williams (LOL)

I have a post that relates to "ethics" that may be for a weekly share.

Hi Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Real Estate Svcs.
I'm starting to ask that same question!!! I've been working on the template for the new series, so hopefully I'll get more efficient as the weeks go by. The time needed for this and my other series is starting to add up. It might be a good thing the golf season is ending, so I'll have more time... or I may have to cut back on something. LOL

One Active Rain blogger can do much to round out and improve the platform. Thank you Carol Williams for taking a swing, teeing off to help expose new bloggers, to recognize and get them in the habit of participating.

Who would not support the welcome approach among us? Good luck getting any help you need. I would like to see the Active Rain YouTube channel revamped and all it takes is an army of one to make the simple tweaks to modernize and breathe life into a parked rusting asset. We could post new member introduction videos easily on a playlist.

Sorry, I'm late in replying.

Thank you. Can you drop these in the ActiveRain Information Center group, please? Thanks!

Carol Williams - I'm sorry. I have made several attempts to drop these into the ActiveRain Information Center Group but it hasn't worked yet.

I joined the Group. Then I went back to my original posts, clicked to edit and added the group but it hasn't worked yet. I logged off and tried again. My original post shows I added it to the Information Group but it's not showing up.

Hi Carol,

What a great idea! A warm welcome and a little encouragement can make a big difference for new members. I love that you're combining introductions with educational resources to help people get involved and get the most out of ActiveRain.

Quick question: Earlier today, I was writing a blog post and ran into some formatting issues. The font size kept changing between paragraphs, and I couldn't get it to stay consistent. Do you have a preferred browser for writing posts on ActiveRain, or one that seems to work best?

Thanks for creating the ActiveRain Information Center. I'm looking forward to following the series and learning from the resources you share!

Hi Candy Stevens, EA
Thanks, it's going to take a while to currate what is already in the archives and get more blogs into the group.

In the meantime, the Q&A is a great place to post a question if you can't figure something out. There are no dumb questions. We're all here to help each other.

One page that points at everything else is more useful than it sounds. The problem with a site that has been running this long is not missing information, it is that the good stuff is scattered across fifteen years of archives and you only find it by accident. Nice to have somebody building the index.

Exactly, Steven Hoeke
It's going to take a while to curate what is in the archives, and get the new blog posts up. It's like eating an elephant... one bite at a time.

Have you joined the Active Information Center group yet?
