Blogging 101: Tricks, Tips & Aha Moments

Thanks to Kathy Streib and Eileen Burns 954.483.3912 for hosting this month's Challenge on Tips & Tricks of the Blogging world.

I started back in 2007 and had no clue what a blog was.   I lurked for months, like most, and read what others wrote. Finally got my courage and wrote (a bad one) one.

The hardest part of blogging daily is coming up with topics.   I always have a notebook with me, plus my Notes in my phone.   When out driving, something will trigger a post that could be interesting.  I take photos while I am out also, to add to the post.   There are so many aspects to a transaction or what you experience DURING the Transaction.

I did a series for a while - Q & A from clients.  If one client asked, it could be a question other buyers would ask, so I wrote about it.

Before retiring, it was all real estate, and some personal, like trips.   Being retired and now living in Portugal, it is all about experiencing new things and sharing them with the members.

TIPS:

  • Try to break up your blog so it doesn't look like a wall of words, adding paragraphing.
  • Bold some words, add numbering a list if needed.
  • Add photos to add color, and again, to break up the words.
  • Have Grammarly fix your misspelled words and punctuation.  (We all do it, but they don't have to be published that way!  It is free to you!
  • Have 50 words in your post, so you get points.   (you might as well, you are writing one!)
  • It is nice when someone comments on your post; interact, and go and find their post and make a comment!   Interact!   After all, they may have a referral for you down the road!

TRICKS:

  • We have so much AI available to us at our fingertips; go find a blog title that is catchy!   That could entice a reader to stop by your post.

  • Use AI to create a feature photo for your post, or a photo inside your blog.  It adds to the post and the topic.

Hope this all helps in writing more blogs!

The notebook in the car is the whole trick. Topics are not scarce, they are just unrecorded, and by the time you sit down to write you have forgotten the thing that was actually interesting. Lurking for months before posting a bad one is also the normal path and nobody admits it.

Good morning Joan. Pen and paper at hand is a definite advantage in retaining random thoughts that come from time to time. Now, those of us who will never move to Portugal, can enjoy the experience vicariously through your posts. Keep them coming.

Steven Hoeke that is the key, to have something to write it down when it pops into your head, and you don't FORGET.

Hi Joan- these are great tips. I love the tips about breaking up the wall of words with photos or graphics. It's hard to read or want to read a post when there's nothing but words...and not even bold words to break it up.

Joan, your client Q&A series solves two problems at once: finding a topic and knowing why someone would read it. Along with the question, I would capture the misunderstanding behind it and the decision the answer helped the client make. That turns a notebook entry into a useful article with a clear purpose, rather than another topic waiting for inspiration.

Expert guidance. Exceptional results.

Thanks for sharing these neat little tricks, Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner. It's always tough to find new ideas, so keeping a small notepad close by is a really smart move. We can all use your great tip to break up big blocks of text, since it makes reading so much easier.

Lew Corcoran the "wall of words" is the worst, so difficult to read.    The notebook helped me so much.
