First Charlie Harden Columbia, SC Real Estate Blog Post

By
Real Estate Agent

I honestly never thought I'd be doing anything called a ‘blog'.  In fact in my day if you did something called a blog you were probably going to be in big trouble or, at the least, very embarrassed.  I've learned a blog is a web log, get it?  Here's another unusual term, the ‘wiki' encyclopedia said a blog is "usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog".  So, for better or worse here it is.  The first installment of the (fanfare please!) CHARLIE HARDEN REAL ESTATE BLOG!

Hopefully I'll be able to share with you about Columbia, SC real estate and all the towns, communities and attractions that encompass it.  But to begin, how about, "What I did on summer vacation?"

Plenty of Golf!  One of the things I absolutely love about SC is our year round golf season, and I mean 12+ months a year!  This summer's Carolinas Golf magazine quotes none other than Arnold Palmer touting our state for its fine golf and the warmth, welcoming and genuineness of the people here.

My friend Bill, a great golfing companion who is 65, now constantly reminds me he can soon retire and play golf full time AND about the two holes in one he has had in the past 3 years.  Believe me, he won't let anybody within earshot get away without hearing about the aces.  I try to tell him about the benefits of being in my club - golfers who have never had a hole in one - and what an exclusive bunch we are and how he can't get in anymore, but I don't think he's buying it.

Again this season we've been battling the Japanese beetles in our yard.  My daughter said, "Why don't they just stay in Japan?"  It's a good question.  They only attack our crepe myrtles, rose bushes and magnolia tree.  What is the best thing to get rid of them?  Who knows?  Our magnolia,  the "Colley Tree" is a Little Gem magnolia given to us by our friends the Colleys when we moved out of my wife's old neighborhood in Chapin.  It's growing, growing, growing, but it attracts the Japanese beetles, too.

We put those ‘bag-a-bug' beetle traps with the baits out every year, and like a friend of ours said, "I think those things just attract them."  We spray with liquid sevin, and they still are everywhere.  They eat out the tops of the crepe myrtle bushes and cause the blooms to be less full if they bloom at all.  My wife has all kinds of other plants in her gardens and the beetles don't bother them at all.  I went by the chain hardware ‘garden shop' and here's the best advice I got, "Sir, I really don't know."  Well, I don't either.

"Hot enuff for ya?"  I remarked to a lady at a gas station last month, "I don't know what's worse the heat or the gas prices."  She giggled, flashed me a million dollar smile and drove off.  It's true, it's awful.  The heat and the high prices are both setting records in South Carolina this year.

I was talking with another lady at a fast food drive through window about the heat.  She said she grew up on a farm, and spending days out in the field with her daddy, didn't remember it being this sticky and hot and humid.  I said, "I don't remember a June being as hot as this one was."  She said, "You're right about that."  I said, "Well, thank goodness it's July.  It's a little cooler now."  The weather is getting stranger.

On to business, I guess... I'm now with Leo!  The Leo Windham Agency, located at 621 Lady Street in Columbia.  After spending 38 years in the broadcasting business, 26 of it with his brother Woody on "The Windham Brothers Morning Show" and now being in the real estate business, Leo deserves all the good fortune he can get.  Either that or psychiatric care.  I can tell it's gonna be fun, because he loves the business and this area.

My wife says that in my business photo I look somewhat hesitant, maybe even a little afraid.  When I reminded her it was taken right before we got married 7 years ago she got really irritated for some reason.  Nobody said marriage would be easy, much less real estate.  Oh well, until the next BLOG POST, have fun!  And if you're ready to purchase or sell real estate now or in the near future or know somebody who is, give me a call or shoot me an e-mail.

Thank you, Leander.  I have enjoyed reading some of your posts already and will certainly refer to them often.  Several others have said that blogging will 'pay off', and it already seems to in professional contacts, learning and laughs.  Not too bad!

Charlie welocome to the rain "active" rain that is ... if I were you I would update the photo so that when your wife starts looking over your shoulder to see why this new blogging thing you are doing is taking up so much of your time she isn't reminded of your comment by the current photo .

Kathy - Thanks for the comment, and that's a good thought.  I'm gonna try not to let blogging take up too much time, if that's possible.  Gimme some time saving tips.  Yeah, the photo needs to be replaced, gotta do that soon across the board, business cards, etc...  Don't give me too much to do on Monday!  Have a great week.
