Osterhoudt House c.1691, Town of Ulster NY        Tonight I decided to stop in at a restaurant called Fred's Place;  on the way I noticed a beautiful old stone house, so it became my mission to find out more.

Since it was located just three doors down from the restaurant I assumed this would be a question familiar to the waiters and waitresses.  My waiteress did not have the answer so curious Jennifer called the owner over, who told me it was the oldest house in the town of Ulster.  On my way home of course I whipped out the camera and took a few shots.  Then back at my computer I googled oldest house in town of Ulster and the photo matched.  So I hope you like this old house as much as I did.

Pat - It looks like it is lived in; such a beauty and they certainly don't build them like that anymore.

Jennifer, that is too cool.  We don 't have old houses like that back here.  I agree with Patricia it was built to last.  Somehow I don't see our new construction holding up like that.

Chris - It caught my eyes and I just wanted to know more, I refrained from trespassing so I just took the shot from the road.  I would have loved to take a closer look.  Next time I am in the area I might just knock on the door.

Marchel - This area has many old homes, I also love the related history.  I agree that those homes were built to last.  Some of these homes would be unaffordable in today's market.

What a great old house. It would seem that there would be more public information about it like year built etc. Is their a library or city hall that might give you more info. Please write another blog if you learn anything more.

Patty & Scott - I am still trying to get more information.  I will see what the town historian has to say on the subject.  If I do get more information I will be sure do a post.

Robert - They probably couldn't afford to make them like that now.

Charles - This house looks like it is in great shape,  however I sure would like to peek inside.

Nancy - At first I was not please that  the sun was shining through because I thought it would spoil the shot but I was please with the outcome.

Jennifer, what a wonderful house!  Great photos, too.  I wonder whether it's administered as a museum or is still in private hands?

Jennifer.. These pictures are amazing!! I love old homes.  Do you know if it is occupied?  Maybe you could talk to the owners and get shots of the inside.. or more history on the home.

Jennifer, what a great old house! I thought of that show, "If Walls Could Talk" on HGTV and it struck me that this house would not have a novel of information, it would have a library! I grew up in a house built in the 1910's and thought it was old. Now I know it was still a spring chicken!

Hi Jennifer,

How interesting, and this place still looks great. 1691 I can't even imagine what that would be like. Here in SoCal if something was built in the 1950's it's considered old. Every now and then we get one that was built in the 1920's and that's unique.

Now 1691, that's saying something. Now if only "those wall could talk..." wouldn't that be interesting?
