Sunday/Day of Rest/Day of Leisure

Yes right!  I said Day of Rest/Day of Leisure.  If you are like many busy real estate agents, you spend most of your weekend with clients or hosting an open house because that is when the buyers/sellers are available.

Is it possible to have time off in our chosen field of real estate and still be successful?  YES, YES, YES.  But it takes a bit of work and dedication to make it happen.

My advice to new and experienced agents was to work three weekends per month AND schedule one weekend for yourself & your family.  Yes I know, sometimes it is harder to stick by this decision than most other we make in this business because we fear losing a few dollars.  However, I learned the hard way early in my career.  I was so anxious to succeed that I almost burned myself out until my manager suggested that I take a half day off if I couldn't take a full day.  What a difference that made in my energy level and my thinking was clearer.  Eventually I was able to take a full day and finally an entire weekend off.

Here are ideas from my top producers over the years:

  1. Go shopping out of town.  She was a shop-aholic and loved every minute of it.
  2. Sing in the choir on Sunday morning wearing your name tag or company shirt because you are going to open house in afternoon.
  3. Go camping in the woods where there is no cell phone reception.  Your family will love it!
  4. Team up with partner and alternate weekends off.
  5. Former CRS instructor said that his personal vow was never work on Sunday.
  6. Travel to another country for a few weeks.  Pay another agent to carry your cell phone and respond to calls, etc.  Check with agent at predetermined times for urgent messages, etc.  Some agents don't call at all!
  7. My best escape was aboard the US'N TWO traveling along the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Rochester area.  Crossing Lake Erie with the roar of the engine, I couldn't hear my cell phone ring.  Later in the canal there were long, long stretches where my cell phone would not work.  Oh well!  My business and my office survived and we had a wonderful vacation.
  8. If all else fails, make Monday or Tuesday your day off!!

What am I doing this afternoon?  I plan to join family and grandkids and cruise Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie for a few hours.

What are your plans today?

I'm not quite ready to take a day off -- maybe next year.

Mary, you're quite right about needing some time off.  Those extra few dollars don't make up for losing our identity and our energy.  If we have to work weekends, then take off a different day.

Good suggestions -- I like the idea of making Monday/Tuesday my "weekend", too, as this makes more sense for me.     I work in an area where the city dwellers come to me, on the weekend!
